Debra Hill, who died on Monday aged 54, co-wrote and produced Halloween, the 1970s horror film starring a young Jamie Lee Curtis as a babysitter terrorised by a masked psychopath; the film is now regarded as one of the most influential in the genre and has since spawned hundreds of lesser "slasher" movies.
Debra Hill was surprised at some critics' accusations that Halloween was misogynistic, and said later that it was "totally unintentional" that the killer seemed to hone in on sexually active teenage girls.
Debra Hill was born in 1950 at Haddonfield, a comfortable suburb in New Jersey, and grew up in Philadelphia.

Hill returned to the series to help script Halloween II (1981) with Carpenter and received credit for creating characters that appeared in Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers (1995), Halloween 5 (1989) and Halloween: Resurrection.
In 1988, Hill entered into a contract with Walt Disney Pictures during which she produced the comedy Gross Anatomy (1989) and several short films for the Walt Disney theme parks.
