DebraShipley, MP for Stourbridge, has welcomed the decision of the National Consumer Council (NCC) to join the campaign to ban food and drink advertising during pre-school children's television.
DebraShipley recently introduced a bill into Parliament which would have banned advertising during TV scheduling for the under 5s, but the bill fell due to lack of parliamentary time.
DebraShipley said: "I am delighted that the NCC is backing the campaign as the evidence that aggressive food marketing encourages unhealthy eating amongst children is growing.
The National Union of Teachers has pledged its support to a private members bill brought by DebraShipley, Labour MP for Stourbridge, aimed at banning adverts for foods with high fat, sugar or salt content during pre-school children's television programmes.
Unveiling her proposals for the children's television (advertising) bill, Ms Shipley attacked the "ruthless and cynical" targeting of British children by the food industry".
Ms Shipley has received support for her bill from 100 MPs and 89 organisations, including the National Heart Foundation, the Women's Institute, the British Heart Foundation and the National Obesity Federation, as well as teaching organisations.

Government proposals to create a new children's commissioner have come under fire from Stourbridge Labour MP DebraShipley - after years of campaigning for such a post to be created.
Miss Shipley attacked the latest plans, saying the proposed commissioner would lack the powers to promote the rights and interests of children.
Miss Shipley said she welcomed the publication of the Bill, and the Government's commitment to appoint a children's commissioner.
The legislation, introduced by Labor Party MP DebraShipley, stands little chance of becoming law because of lack of parliamentary time.
Shipley accused the government's Department of Culture, Media and Sport, which is responsible for regulating advertising, of failing "to take action to prevent high-fat, high-salt and high-sugar content food and drink advertisements being targeted at pre-school children."
Shipley's bill will receive a second reading in July and, although time is likely to run out on the measure, Dalmeny said the legislation is "flagging food advertising up as an issue" and that many groups were prepared to push for a ban.

MAS West Midlands | In the News | MP visits Stourbridge manufacturers(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
As a result of the visit, and encouraged by the work MAS-WM is carrying out with manufacturers, DebraShipley MP will be visiting metal forming and finishing company Bronx Manufacturing and cable cover manufacturer Alscott Sections and Plastics, both based in Lye, to learn how they have moved forward with guidance and support from MAS-WM.
DebraShipley MP said: I was really looking forward to visiting these companies and it has been great to find out about the economic success they have built in Stourbridge.
Debras visits to manufacturers in her constituency are a key indicator that our message is getting to key influencers in order to promote manufacturing in the Midlands.
However, although Shipley’s bill received widespread publicity and apparently was the spur for Jowell’s December announcement, it did not become law.
Angered by this foot-dragging, Shipley told The Ecologist that she was ‘appalled that [Jowell] is still delaying action and is kicking the issue into the long grass again’.
When the MP asked for a list of meetings between Jowell or her officials and the food industry, instead of posting the reply on Parliament’s website, as is normal, the government hid its response in a letter deposited in the House of Commons library.
DebraShipley, a member of the British House of Commons, introduced a bill last year to ban the advertising of food and drink high in sugar, salt and fat from children's TV.
Though unsuccessful, she contends that evidence that childhood obesity is a serious problem is overwhelming and that public support for a general ban has become louder and more determined.
DebraShipley concedes that advertising is not the only cause, but argues that research has clearly determined it to be a significant contributory factor.
One of Labour's unexpected 1997 winners, DebraShipley achieved a major success soon after her election when she introduced a private members' bill establishing a register of child abusers which must be checked by childcare organisations taking on new staff.
Ms Shipley has continued to campaign on behalf of children and has called for a dedicated youth ministry to be established.
She was initially seen as a government loyalist but has shown gradual signs of dissent.
Junk food advertising aimed at children could be banned under proposals contained in a new bill that was last week presented to the UK parliament.
Introduced by DebraShipley MP, the Children's Food Bill is designed to regulate the marketing, promotion and sale of food and drink to children.
Despite the wide support, Ms Shipley said she was 'realistic' about the bill's prospects, and noted that its chances of reaching the statute books within the next few years were limited.
Shipley is a former member of the UK Parliament for Stourbridge.
A key achievement during her time as MP was gaining wide support for child protection issues, culminating in the Protection of Children Act 1999.
Shipley has also campaigned on children's issues such as TV advertising and food.

RIBA: Hyett and Shipley in PFI dialogue(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
RIBA President Paul Hyett yesterday met with MP DebraShipley, joint chair of the Architecture and Planning Associate Parliamentary Group.
During a vigorous meeting, Paul Hyett argued the case for small architectural practices, many of which are currently excluded from large PFI projects due to the inflexibility of the bidding process.
We told her that local communities would benefit from changes to PFI rules, which would enable small practices to enter framework agreements from which they are currently excluded.
Her two most significant initiatives were the Protection of Children Act, which required that childcacre orgnizations check new staff agasinst a newly-created registry of child abusers, and the Children's Food Bill, which called for the removal of "unhealthy" food from school vending machines and improvements to school meals.
The Communication Initiative - Thinking - Call for advert-free 'toddler TV'(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Shipley's claims by contending that "the overall quality of children's programming might fall if there were fewer advertising revenues available for TV companies, despite unprecedented rates of obesity among children." However, Shipley stands firm in suggesting something called "toddler TV", which she describes as a time period that is free from any advertising.
In response to an MP official who criticised her for putting young children in a bubble, Shipley claimed to want such protection for children.
She asked parents to stand up and ask for a change in the rules governing advertising aimed toward children.
An Early Day Motion (EDM) in support of Sustain’s Children Food Bill, tabled by DebraShipley MP [1], already has support from 57 cross-party MPs [2].
The EDM acknowledges the strength of the Children’s Food Bill in improving children’s diets and future health and sends a powerful message to the Department of Health, whose public health consultation ends this week [3].
The Children’s Food Bill, developed by Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming in response to the growing crisis in children’s diet-related health [4], was presented to Parliament by DebraShipley on Tuesday 18 May. It is currently supported by 114 national organisations [5].

More than 80% of parents stated that they did not concede to demands – parents are in control.
Ms Shipley’s concern about the influence of advertising on children is contradicted by a recent review of scientific research conducted by Dr Brian Young of Exeter University's School of Psychology.
He found that when actual family behaviour is studied the impact of advertising on children's food choices and attitudes is not generally considered to be significant - of greater significance is the influence of siblings and peers.

For DebraShipley, her duties as a nurse began to conflict with her Christian faith when the county health clinic where she worked near Memphis required she dispense the morning-after pill.
"I felt like my religious liberties were being violated," said Shipley, 49, of Atoka, Tenn. "I could not live with myself if it did it.
