The towns of Debre Birhan, Antsokia, Ankober, Entoto and Addis Ababa have all served as the capital of Shewa at various times.
The great monastery of Debre Libanos is located in the district of Selale in northern Shewa.
Shewa was in recent times a Governorate-General (Province) under the monarchy, and then was named an "Administrative Region" of Ethiopia until fairly recently, when the modern regions (based on ethnic and linguistic boundaries) were introduced.

Most significantly, the Monastery of Debre Libanos, the leading seat of eclessiastical learning in the Ethiopian Church, was burned to the ground, it's manuscrips, it's clergy, it's relics distroyed.
It is said that the commander of the troops that captured Debre Libanos was named Abu Bakr, and that he knew how deeply Ethiopian Christians revered Debre Libanos, and had tried to start negotiations with the monks on them handing over valuable vessles, robes gold and jewels in exchange for the monastery being spared.

After a brief war, the last of the Zagwe Emperors, Harbe II, was convinced by St. Tekle Haimanot, the founder of Debre Libanos Monastery (thus the first Echege of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church) to relinquish the throne in favor of Yekonu Amlak, a direct decendent of the last Axumite Emperor Anbassa Widim.
Yekonu Amlak was crowned at Debre Birhan in Shewa, and was based there.
His relationship with the Church was very close due to the role of Saint Tekle Haimanot in convincing Harbe II to abdicate in his favor.

Sululta plain is a wide shallow valley, ringed by mountains, with many rivers draining into it and forming extensive wetlands for much of the year.
Debre Libanos has been an important monastic centre for Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity since it was established in the 13th century by Saint Teklehaimanot, a renowned mystic.
Visitors can see a small cave near the church (which is of recent construction) where Teclehaimanot is said to have stood for seven years on one leg, until the other wasted away and dropped off.

Restricted to mature areas of vegetation, with 10+ at Wondo Guenet on 25th Feb. Birds also seen at Debre Libanos monastery and also in the wooded area downslope of the NP in the Bale Mountains.
Present in small to medium numbers near rocky outcrops, in particular Debre Libanos gorge, the roadside gorge north of Wondo Guenet and Wondo Guenet itself.
Fairly common, particularly in wooded areas, with c.8 at Debre Libanos 23rd Feb and 6+ Wondo Guenet being the highest concentrations.

Road repair was underway between Addis and Debre Zeyit (and ultimately to Awasa and Djibouti), and between Addis and Jimma and Addis and Woldiya.
We went straight to the Debre Damo Hotel in Asmara Road (recommended by Claudio), where we made bookings for later in the trip, and they kindly allowed us to leave some supplies for the Gambela section of our trip in their storeroom.
On reaching the road we turned northwards and continued on to Debre Libanos, stopping along the way to admire a troop of Gelada baboons for an hour or so.
