Debrecen is the regional centre of the Northern Great Plain region and the capital of Hajdú-Bihar county.
In the following decades Debrecen was the third largest city of Hungary (behind Budapest and Miskolc), and became the second largest in the 1990s when the population of Miskolc decreased.
Debrecen is home to a large university, University of Debrecen, whose main building is a widely recognized work of architecture.

Debrecen, the third largest town in Hungary after Budapest and Miskolc, lies in the lowlands east of the Tisza, on Highway 4; it is the traditional cultural and economic center of the region and, since 1950, its capital.
Following the merging of several smaller settlements in the Middle Ages, the place where Debrecen now stands became a regional trade center for livestock and agriculture, and in 1361 it was elevated to the status of a town.
