  Debt AIDS Trade in Africa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Debt, AIDS, Trade in Africa (or DATA) is a multinational non-government organization founded in January 2002 in London by U2's Bono along with Bobby Shriver and activists from the Jubilee 2000 Drop the Debt campaign.
It was created for the purpose of obtaining equality and justice for Africa through debt relief, adjusting trade rules which burden Africa, eliminating the African AIDS epidemic, strengthening democracy, more accountability by the wealthiest nations and African leaders and transparency towards the people.
DATA is currently placing most of its resources into supporting the ONE Campaign.

Debt cancellation was a major thrust of Bono's visit to Africa this past summer with U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill.
Bono and other debt-cancellation advocates are legitimately concerned that these debts compromise the abilities of developing countries to build and maintain the basic infrastructures necessary to deliver the care and medicine to combat the AIDS epidemic.
The organization that brought Bono to Lincoln is called DATA, a double acronym for Debt AIDS Trade Africa/Democracy Accountability Transparency in Africa.

We've ignored Africa for too long, and I was sad (though not surprised) to see Clinton's overtures towards them given the cold shoulder by Bush.
He is already dealing w/ AIDS in Africa, but he's not trying to set up a seperate organization - rather, he's looking at the best organizations already working on the problem and attempting to feed them resources (as well as encouraging matching donations, and lending management expertise).
Regarding whether Africans support such a plan, there is much resemblance here to Mbeki's Millennium Plan for Africa, which went beyond begging/demanding debt relief and instead proposed trading debt relief for governmental and economic reforms in a pro-active manner.
