Neil Young - 'Greatest Hits' review
Any serious Young fan already owns either ‘Decade’ or the early Young albums from which the collection was compiled.
As such, compiling a collection truly representative of his entire career is a difficult task indeed, but his new ‘Greatest Hits’ compilation—the first new ‘Best Of’ collection from Neil Young in 27 years (1977’s ‘Decade’ being the last)—attempts to do just that.
Still, “Greatest Hits” is a terrific, inexpensive introduction to the work of an essential artist—if you’re not planning on buying all of the 30 or so albums Young has released since 1969, this is a must have for any serious rock music collection.

If "Decade" is the only Neil Young album you already own then you're paying a lot for only a few tracks more and if you buy this album first and then buy "Decade", as new recruits may well do...
Well, as a 5 star selection of Neil Young tracks there's little to fault this album - every one is top notch and together they cover a very fair cross-section of his often complex wanderings between folk, country and hard-rock.
Neil is guilty of as many misses as hits but this album most definitely contains hits and only hits.

Young's previous compilation is the well sourced 3 LP/2CD Decade album covering not only his solo work but also his time with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Stills Young Band and Buffalo Springfield.
As first reported in Undercover on September 20, Neil Young 'Greatest Hits' is based mainly on songs from the 70s with 'Rocking In The Free World' and 'Harvest Moon' being the only representatives of his massive body of work from the 80s and 90s.
There was previously a Greatest Hits released in Australia by Warner Music to coincide with his first Aussie tour in 1987.

But if someone really wanted to get that deep into Neil Young, they would probably already own those important albums or at least his first (and only other) 'Greatest Hits' album, 1977's Decade.
Despite the absence of many Young classics, this greatest hits compilation is a solid starter for Neil Young fans, and a nice single disc compilation of his major singles.
'Greatest Hits' is not meant to be a compilation for the die-hard Neil Young fan.

Nude as the News: Neil Young: Ragged Glory
Help them understand Ragged Glory is Neil Young's best album since Rust Never Sleeps, as well as one of the decade's best recordings.
Whereas Neil Young incorporated the punk attitudes of the late 1970s for Rust -- borrowing ideals and feebacky sound from burgeoning English acts -- he created Ragged Glory in the grunge world of plaid shirts and fuzzy guitars before Pearl Jam even sat down to write a song together.
Try to tell them this: a few solid listens reveal this album to be a testament to the creative endurance of one rock history's most unique voices.

 Amazon.com: Decade [BOX SET]: Music
I've got every Neil Young album made in the '70s but Decade does a pretty decent job of spotlighting his first few years on vinyl.
For the fan, Neil has included some of the rare and obscure work he personally liked but which wasn't a major part of his album work-songs like Love is a Rose, Deep Forbidden Lake and Campaigner, works that obviously mean a lot to him personally.
The album defined Young to rock radio the way Hot Rocks determined which Rolling Stones songs would become classics, but this is more than a quickie greatest-hits collection.

 Neil Young Album Reviews
Amazingly, this album wasn’t released on cd until 2004 (whatever his reasons, be they dismay at the cd medium or whatever, Neil should do right by his fans and make all of his albums readily available), which is a damn shame considering that it's undoubtedly one of his best albums.
So does this album as a whole, as for all its flaws, both from a songwriting and a performance standpoint, this is an unflinchingly honest and fascinatingly from-the-gut depiction of where Neil Young was at that particular time.
Neil Young's first solo album after the breakup of Buffalo Springfield is a tentative affair on which the vocals are mixed too far back (due to Neil's lack of confidence in himself as a singer) and the production is too soft (due to the prominence of Jack Nitzsche's string arrangements).

 DVDFILE.COM: Greendale review
Here's the history: The first CD release of the Greendale album included a bonus DVD of Neil performing an acoustic concert of his Greendale songs at a lovely venue in Ireland.
Fans of Neil Young might be a bit disappointed that the DVD footage from the two CD releases of the Greendale album aren't included here in their entireties, but that's the worst thing that can be said about this one.
Greendale the record still sounds like a million bucks - even if you think the visual style of the film is overcooked, the music behind it is some of Young's best stuff since Silver and Gold - but this film legitimately adds more coals to his already-blazing fire.

Neil Young: Greendale Movie and Tour News
Anyone who bought Neil Young’s Greendale album last year was rewarded with the man’s best collection of songs in a decade.
The album also became a musical; a purposefully ragtag show meant to echo a high school musical, which received a lukewarm response from audiences and critics alike when performed as part of Young's last tour.
The film is entertaining, but it is a vehicle for the songs of ''Greendale'' the CD, which drive the entire enterprise, slash their satirical victims and give Young, still the musical maverick he always was and will always be, an opportunity to talk to, look at and assess himself, through the eyes of his characters.

BBC - Classic Rock/Pop Review - Neil Young, Greendale
So this is an album that is good to add to the collection if you like Neil performing near the core of his musical spectrum, but if you expect something wildly new or different, or if you think that the core of Neil's work is Heart of Gold and Harvest Moon, you will be disappointed.
Sure, the Greendale story doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense, but for an artist as far into a career as Young is, Greendale (the album) is more than just a sign that Young's got more great work in him.
