Decapoda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The decapods or Decapoda are an order of crustaceans within the class Malacostraca, including many familiar groups, such as crabs, lobsters, prawns and shrimps, but also some families that are less well known.
As their name implies, all decapods have ten legs; these are the last five of the eight pairs of thoracic appendages characteristic of crustaceans.
Further appendages are found on the abdomen, with each segment capable of carrying a pair of biramous pleopods, the last of which form part of the tail fan (together with the telson) and are called uropods.

 Anatomy
A decapods body is composed of a series of hard segments called somites.
Decapods have a fast growth rate and need to moult their exoskeleton to grow.
A soft new shell is continually grown under their existing exoskeleton and as the moult draws near a hormone is released from sacks in the eye stalks.

Carcinization is believed to have occurred in a number of groups of decapod crustaceans, most notably king crabs which most scientists believe evolved from hermit crab ancestors (there is still some debate over this point).

Anatomy is the study of the structure and organization of the body.
The main branches are gross anatomy, which deals with structures that can be seen with a naked eye, and histology, which deals with anatomy at the microscopic level.

The 15 individual volumes are arranged phylogenetically, beginning with the protozoa, defined herein as the motile protists, and concluding with the invertebrate members of the phylum Chordata.
Although gross and external anatomy are discussed in some detail, the emphasis of this work is consistently on functional invertebrate anatomy, particularly at the ultrastructural level.
It does not remain limited to fundamental descriptions of anatomical structure but rather goes beyond that level to offer a compelling view of microscopic anatomy that relates structure to function in various organisms.
