 DECATUR County
The name of the county was given to it in commemoration of Commodore Stephen Decatur, who was born in Sinnepaxent, Md., and killed in a duel with Commodore James Barron, March 20, 1820, and who was a prominent actor in the war of 1812.
November 1, 1879, a mass convention of the voters of Decatur County, was held on the south side of Beckwith & McCall's store, at Oberlin; fully 300 voters, with their families, were assembled, and the hall, the usual place of assemblage, was not large enough to accommodate the vast assembly.
George H. Case, of Jewell County, is the Representative of Decatur County in the Senate.

As Decatur County was a part of Perry County until the organization in November, 1845, the records of the county to that date were a record of Perry County and the destruction of nearly all since that date up to 1869 renders a review of the courts impossible.

The Decatur County Coon Hunters had staged a benefit hunt the two previous years for the American Cancer Crusade, but this year they had decided the proceeds should go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
They approached the Decatur County Jaycette to help run the concessions, and thus the beginning of a beautiful relationship that has grown to include everyone in the entire county.
The early days were hard as the facilities were crude compared to the Decatur County Fairgrounds building, which now houses the event.
