 Baby Teeth (deciduous teeth)
Baby teeth, also known as deciduous teeth, primary or milk teeth are the teeth that children have due to the fact that infant jaws are too small to accommodate adult-sized teeth.
By the time a child is 3 years old, he or she has a set of 20 deciduous teeth, 10 in the lower and 10 in the upper jaw.
Recent research into baby teeth has led to the discovery by scientists that baby teeth from are also a good source of stem cells, a type of cell that can transform into and generate other cells.

ACVC 2001 - Assisting with Extractions
Permanently retained deciduous teeth predispose the permanent dentition to premature periodontal disease because of accelerated accumulation of dental plaque and calculus formation.
Supernumerary teeth may cause the same dental problems that are associated with retained deciduous teeth.
Other indications for extraction of teeth affected with periodontal disease include periodontal pockets extending to the apex of the tooth pockets that reach the nasal cavity or maxillary sinus, and periapical abscesses.

 Dealing with Retained "Baby -Teeth"
This is commonly referred to as “retained deciduous teeth.” This situation leads to problems as two teeth try to occupy the same area causing the new permanent tooth to erupt at an abnormal angle or in an abnormal position.
These two sets of canine teeth – one mandibular set on the lower jaw and one maxillary set on the upper jaw – are the sharp fang-like teeth that are just behind the front 6 central incisors.
Extraction (or removal) of the retained deciduous teeth is recommended as soon as the problem is identified, since early removal allows the adult teeth to move into their normal positions preventing malocclusion problems.

The ESRF reveals how Neanderthal teeth grew
Teeth express genetic differences found between individuals and different populations more efficiently than any other tissues preserved in the fossil record.
Scientists used the ESRF X-rays to study the enamel dentine junction of a deciduous and a permanent Neanderthal molar tooth (approximately 130,000 years old) that was found on a site in France.
Almost all deciduous teeth contained an accentuated birth line, or neonatal line that results from the changing physiology and stress of birth.

A Discriminant Function Analysis of Deciduous Teeth to Determine Sex
Studies of deciduous teeth have concluded that crown size differences in these teeth between males and females are not reliable sex discriminators, in contrast to such differences in permanent teeth.
Using three to five measurements of deciduous teeth, discriminant analyses of several samplings of these children produced discriminant functions in which 76 to 90% of the holdout samples were correctly classified by sex.
Combinations of deciduous and permanent measurements were used to classify 83 to 85% of the holdout samples correctly.

NIH News--Scientists Discover Unique Source of Postnatal Stem Cells--04/21/2003
Scientists report for the first time that “baby” teeth, the temporary teeth that children begin losing around their sixth birthday, contain a rich supply of stem cells in their dental pulp.
They are long lived, grow rapidly in culture, and, with careful prompting in the laboratory, have the potential to induce the formation of specialized dentin, bone, and neuronal cells.
The term “deciduous teeth” is the formal name for what most people call colloquially “baby teeth.” Children normally develop a set of 20 deciduous teeth, which appear after six months of life and generally are replaced, one tooth at a time, between age 6 and 12.
