Decimal Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On February 15, 1971, variously known as Decimal Day, Decimalisation Day and D-Day, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland decimalised their historical currencies.
Following the rejection by parliament of Lord Wrottesley's proposals to decimalise Sterling in 1824 (which were prompted by the introduction in 1795 of the decimal French Franc), little practical progress towards decimalisation was made for over a century, with the exception of the two-shilling silver florin (worth 1/10 of a pound) first issued in 1849.
The Decimal Currency Board (DCB) was created to manage the transition, although the plans were not approved by Parliament until the Decimal Currency Act in July 1967.

 A Guide To Metric Time
Blocking out the day in ABT hours is manageable, but a tenth of a day is too long a period to be useful for higher resolution mapping of the day on the scale of appointments, TV show times and such (although it would still have value as a low resolution day-overview).
Although a tenth of a day is a convenient unit for scheduling purposes, it is a rather arbitrary one as the base unit for naming purposes.
The SI second is already used as a decimalized unit in science and engineering, so why not use the SI second as the time unit for technical purposes and the SI day as the unit for clock keeping and day-to-day use (timing boiled eggs and such).

ON THIS DAY | 23 | 1968: Decimal coins reach the high street
The first decimal coins are making their way into purses throughout Britain, in preparation for replacing the current system of pounds, shillings and pence by 1971.
Lord Fiske, chairman of the Decimal Currency Board, said the coins would be in the minority in tills and in change for a long time.
The centuries-old tradition of using 12 pence to the shilling, and 20 shillings to the pound, was replaced by the new system of 100 new pence to the pound.

The commentary and content about the 1970s changeover from £sd to decimal pounds should probably be rationalised into one article.

Decimal Time - Time of Day
Although there have been decimal time proposals which are based upon decimally dividing other fractions of the day (1/20, 1/24, 1/25, 1/40), most divide the day by 10, 100, 1000, etc. When used on this site, decimal time of day refers specifically to the representation of the fractional day.
There were 10 hours in a day, 100 decimal minutes in an hour and 100 decimal seconds in a decimal minute, so 0.12345 day = 1:23:45.
Although unpopular then and not used anywhere officially today, this is what is often referred to as "decimal time," and many decimal time proposals are based upon French decimal time.

The need for a decimal currency system had been discussed in Parliament in the early nineteenth century and as far back as 1849 a florin was introduced - inscribed 'one tenth of a pound' with the intention that it should be the first step towards the adoption of a decimal system.
To supervise this change-over the Decimal Currency Board was established and one of the decisions of the Board was to calm fears, especially from older members of the community.
The decision to introduce a new decimal currency meant striking hundreds of millions of coins in readiness for D-Day - a task that was beyond the capacity of the existing mint at Tower Hill.

In the case of the Julian day count, the name was given because at the time, the Julian calendar was in use and, therefore, the epoch of the day count was fixed in respect to it.
Note that this day count conforms with the astronomical convention starting the day at noon, in contrast with the civil practice where the day starts with midnight (in popular use the belief is widespread that the day ends with midnight, but this is not the proper scientific use).

One could argue that the notion of a “day” having a fixed duration is a bit of a fiction, since the hours of sunlight vary according to season and latitude, but I think most people are content taking an average (i.e., a mean solar day) as the rule.
Though the idea of a “day” and “year” are with us to stay, however, all the other units—seconds, minutes, hours, weeks, and months (and even seasons, depending on where you live)—are arbitrary divisions that are ripe for revision.
The notion of decimal time appeals to my sense of logic—though it would appeal more if a year were, say, 100 or 500 or 1000 days long.

Inadvertently, this created a logic defect wherein, if the time were closer to the end of the day than the roundoff value, i.e.
the decimal time was effectively 1.0, the time was set to zero but the "one" day was not added to the date.

In English military parlance, D-Day is a term often used to denote the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated.
Whilst the initial D in D-day is not an abbreviation of anything, it is taken from the word day and represents a variable, designating the day upon which some significant event will or has occurred; see Military designation of days and hours for similar terms.
