  Decimus - Why Decimus?
Decimus' father James Burton (1761-1837), is credited with creating the town of St. Leonard's (near Hastings, East Sussex) as a seaside resort for the wealthy, between 1827 and 1837.
Decimus Burton was noted both for his adherence to the classical tradition during the period of the Gothic Revival and for his interest in engineering.
Decimus Burton's works in the classical style include the Ionic screen at Hyde Park Corner of 1828 and the Athenaeum Club of 1830.

Decimus Burton (30 September 1800-December 1881) was a prolific English architect and garden designer, particularly associated with projects in the classical style in London parks, including buildings at Kew Gardens and London Zoo, and with the layout and architecture of the seaside towns of Fleetwood and St Leonards on Sea and of Tunbridge Wells.
Burton's work with his father on the East Sussex town of St Leonards on Sea (1827-1837) had impressed wealthy landowner Sir and he commissioned Burton to lay out his new port and seaside resort.
Decimus Burton retired in 1869, died in December 1881 and was buried alongside his father and other members of his family beneath a distinctive pyramid-shaped memorial in the churchyard at West Hill Road, St Leonards, East Sussex.

Decimus Burton was born on 30th September 1800; his first name means 'tenth' in Latin - he was his parents' tenth child.
Today, the layout of the streets is still partly as Decimus planned it over 160 year ago, and some of the buildings he designed are still in use, such as St. Peter's Church, the North Euston Hotel, Queens Terrace and the Custom House which is now the Museum.
Decimus Burton was very important in the early development of Fleetwood and his skill as an architect and designer was seen not only in Fleetwood but also in many other places in England, Scotland, Wales and abroad.

Decimus Burton, the son of a London builder, first trained as an architect and met early with success – his designs for the Colosseum in Regent’s Park were accepted when he was just 23 years old.
However, Burton’s most notable feature is the Palm House designed and built over four years, between 1844 and 1848, being at the time the largest glass house in the world.

Here's the palm house, the largest greenhouse and the most striking, designed by Decimus Burton, completed in 1848, and restored in the 1950s and 1980s.
The campanile was built by Decimus Burton and built in the 1840's.
It is 32.42m (107ft) high and was originally designed as a water tower and chimney for the Palm House to which it is connected by a tunnel.

Decimus Burton was involved in several development schemes outside London.
A prospectus was issued in 1837 and the town experienced a boom in the early 1840s until a rail link was established with Scotland in 1847.
Decimus designed a number of medium sized country houses and villas and elevations and plans of these survive in the Museum of both classical and rustic type.
