Deck (building) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Decks are made from treated lumber, composite material, cedar, teak, mahogany and other hardwoods and recycled planks made from PET plastic.
A deck of a house is generally a wooden platform built above the ground and connected to the main building.
Larger buildings may also have decks on the upper floors of the building which may be open to the public as observation decks.

 Deck building basics
When a deck is attached to the side of a house, one end of the deck joists is supported by a level pressure-treated, ledger board bolted to the house frame or foundation.
Attaching the ledger early in the deck building process establishes the elevation of the deck, as well as its length and relationship to the house.
Decking boards are usually 2x4s or 2x6s (or a mix of both) and are most commonly nailed off perpendicular to the joists or diagonally.

The definitive guide to building the most popular exterior construction project there is, Building a Deck walks you through the entire process of creating a quality, custom deck: from the planning stages, through construction, to the custom details that can make your deck one of a kind.
Like me, you may find you enjoy building a deck for one (or all) of the various aspects of the job, from the mental challenge of the design work to the physical challenge of pounding nails in by hand.
On most decks, the joists are attached to the ledger at one end, extend away from the house, and are capped at the other end with either a beam or a single board called a rim joist.

I am replacing my deck which was attached directly to the house with each joist inserted into an 8" cutout in the brick; so that instead of being supported by a ledger attached to the house, the deck is supported by the house itself.
If I were building the deck, I would place supports at the 9 ft position as well as the 18ft position and get as rock hard deck as possible with 2x10s.
We are thinking of building a deck on that would be a part of a 25 foot radius semicircle attached to the rear of our home.

Decking tiles | Patio and deck building tiles
Deck or patio tiles are the quick and easy way to cover any hard surface around the home.
Decking tiles are typically 12" x 12" modules that when placed together will form a continuous surface.
Remember that solid wood deck tiles are effectively no different from conventional wood deck decks so the wood will eventually fade to silvery grey colour just as with conventional decking.

 Building A Basic Deck
If we had made the deck slightly bigger, we would have been forced to use 14' lumber, or install the deck boards with some smaller pieces, which is a nuisance.
The final deck board had to be ripped to a narrower width using a circular saw, and it had to be notched for the posts.
Our building department told us that because the decks were so close to the ground, they 1) did not require hand rails and 2) if we chose to install hand rails, that the spindle spacing rules were not applicable.

In effect, you must build a "floating structure" on the fixed supports that are anchored to the house and piers.
However, building practises that I took for granted had to be reviewed because of the differences and oddities of this new plastic lumber.
Screwing the deck boards down is also an alternative however, it would take you a while to complete this method as each hole must be pre-drilled.

It's unlikely that grass would be able to grow in the shadow of your deck, so you might as well transfer the sod to a bare spot in your yard where it would be useful.
The placement of the ledger/header determines the level of the deck floor, so be sure it is positioned at the correct height and is horizontal.
These can be a continuation of the posts which support the deck, or railing posts may be bolted to the outside joist or joist extensions.

Deck Building - Understanding Load Capacity
The load that is placed on your deck is expressed in pounds per square foot (psf) and the total load or more appropriately, the design load, is comprised of the dead load and the live load.
The deck itself and anything on top of it exerts downward force which is transferred to all the beams and any ledger boards that are connected to the house.
And since the deck is symmetrical, the load areas 5 and 6 on the opposite side of the deck are identical.

We used scrap 5/4 decking to establish the height of the skirtboard above the rim; when screwed onto the band joist, the skirt would cover the butt ends of the decking.
The author scribe-fit the decking to the skirtboard, which helped to maintain precise joints between the butt ends of the decking and the skirt.
We scribed and cut the decking to length with a jigsaw, trimming the butt ends with a block plane as needed.
