Decompression sickness, DCS, the bends, dysbarism, or caisson disease describes a condition characterized by a variety of symptoms resulting from exposure to barometric pressure which is getting lower.
When the body is exposed to decreased barometric pressures (as in flying an unpressurized aircraft to altitude, or during a rapid decompression), the nitrogen dissolved in the body comes out of solution.
This table lists the different DCS types with where the bubbles form and their most common symptoms.

A dive computer or decompression meter is an electronic device used by a scuba diver to measure the dive profile and to display information needed for a safe dive, avoiding decompression sickness.
Dive computers address the same problem as decompression tables, but perform a continuous calculation of the partial pressure of gases in the body based on the actual dive profile.
Most dive computers calculate decompression for 'open circuit' SCUBA where the proportions of the breathing gases are constant: these are "constant fraction" dive computers.

This study was commissioned to compare a number of tables used for oxygen decompression in compressed air tunneling work.
Tables from Brazil, France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and USA are included together with the UK tables which are the Blackpool Tables using oxygen from 0.6 bar.
There are two main conclusions from this study: that the Blackpool Tables are predicted to have a volume of gas carried in bubbles which is within the range of that for the other tables studied.; that the other tables studied could all be considered acceptable for use in UK.

However, the majority of dive tables (not all) use slower ascent rates and 10 meters (33 feet) per minute is common in other countries.
Brian Hill's thermodynamic decompression ideas got me into this line of thinking and this slower ascent rate has its advantages and is used in Departure.
Many divers look at only the time limits at the deeper depths when evaluating tables and will notice a difference of 1 to 2 minutes at 130 feet, but do not notice a difference of 60 minutes or greater at 35 feet – which may actually be the more critical measurement.

This repeat dive table itself replaced an older rule of thumb of "deepest depth/total time", in which successive dives gradually used up the bottom time appropriate for the deepest dive (which should have been the first).
The 88 Tables were designed specifically for sports diving, in particular making the planning of repeat dives simpler and subsequently introducing the altitude tables.
The BS-AC commissioned Tom Hennessy to produce the 88 tables which, if I remember correctly, were a remodelling of original RN data.
