Decoupage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Decoupage (or découpage) is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper bits onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf, etc. Commonly an object like a small box or an item of furniture is covered by cutouts from magazines or from purpose-manufactured papers.
Each layer is sealed with varnishes (often multiple coats) until the "stuck on" appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work.
The craft became known as découpage in France as it attained great popularity during the 17th and 18th century.

Decoupage is a process involving cutting out images (or finding small objects which can be glued onto the object’s surface), and then sealing those images with a clear varnish or polyurethane.
The beauty of decoupage is that you don’t always need the idea first - the idea may come to you once you’ve chosen the object onto which you are going to glue your cut-outs.

Today's decoupage is not your grandmother's decoupage: delicate Victorian or floral images on dainty plates buried under innumerable coats of heavy varnish.

The next section offers instructions for smaller decoupage projects, such as an elegant cachepot filled with exquisite decoupaged eggs, a serving tray adorned with favorite images, or a six-sided wooden block puzzle decorated on all sides.
