Dedham: Introduction | British History Online
The Dedham Vale plan of the late 1960s stipulated that agricultural land should not be built on, (Footnote 14) and new houses have since been obtained by rebuilding on old sites, by infilling, and by converting industrial build- ings, such as Dedham mill in 1987 and a former tallow or candle factory in 1992.
Dedham was a fashionable holiday place from the 1890s, (Footnote 96) and the cycle agent recorded in 1898 and the refreshment room in 1912 presumably reflected increased tourism.
(Footnote 7) A Dedham saltpetreman in the service of the earl of Warwick was pillor- ied in Colchester in 1579 for insulting the earl of Oxford, (Footnote 8) and in 1580 a Dedham surgeon and a clothier were among those arrested for sup- porting the royal impostor Robert Mantell.

AONB - Dedham Vale page 1
Because much of East Anglia's traditional grasslands have already been drained and ploughed for arable farming, the hedgerows and wildflower meadows of Dedham Vale are among some of England's most precious and vulnerable pastoral landscapes and the countryside is enhanced by narrow lanes and characteristic timber-frame and thatch houses.
With a population of under 10,000 this is still essentially a farming area, although the AONB now has a significant and growing proportion of residents commuting to Ipswich, Colchester and London.
Tourism is localised, but forms an important part of the economy at Dedham and Flatford, while the River Stour is an important boating and angling water.

 JAIC 1998, Volume 37, Number 3, Article 9 (pp. 362 to 372)
When the overpaint was removed from this area, the paint from Dedham Vale (albeit now in the form of a tree in The White Horse) became visible to the naked eye.
Although Constable applied a few highlights to add volume to his new tree, it is clear that in the large tree mass that had been part of Dedham Vale the paint had been only rudimentarily applied in broad, rapid strokes of greens and dark browns.
From the broad nature of this visible work, it is clear that had Constable been attempting a finished version of Dedham Vale, he did not get very far along before he realized that he would need to create full-size sketches for his future large compositions.
