Fazio Hall of Fame inductee Dee Dee Ramone
Dee Dee himself was sometimes quoted as saying his greatest achievement in life was beating his addictions.
You see, Dee Dee was the sort of person you would WANT to say you knew, even if you had the self image of possessing the ever-so-slightest claim to being "of the rock" in some way, shape or form.
Dee Dee was the living, breathing example of what punk (originally) was about, before the pink Mohawks, designer torn t-shirts and temporary tattoos took over.

Punk Icon Dee Dee Ramone Dead - Jun 06, 2002 - E! Online News   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
Jun 6, 2002, 2:00 PM PT Dee Dee Ramone, a founding member of Hall of Fame punk pioneers the Ramones, was found dead Wednesday night in his Hollywood home, the victim of an apparent drug overdose.
Dee Dee, who wrote such signature Ramones tunes as "Chinese Rock" with fellow punk icon Johnny Thunders (who died of a drug overdose), eventually split from the band after the release of 1989's Brain Drain to become--of all things--a rapper.
While Dee Dee and the Ramones recorded such classics as "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Teenage Lobotomy," "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" and "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," the band never scored a Top 40 hit.

KURT LODER KICKS off his piece "Dee Dee Ramone Remembered by Kurt Loder" by saying, "The Ramones, with their torn jeans, fl leather jackets and walloping, supercharged riffs, were not only the definitive punk band (they created the classic form); they were also a great American band." Jesus, what a bunch of horseshit.
I say it sucks that Dee Dee had a drug problem he couldn't beat and that half the reason we all worshipped those guys is because they looked cool shooting up and now they're all dead.
After leaving the Ramones, Dee Dee tried to form a band with Stiv Bators, who was in the Dead Boys and is in fact now dead, and Johnny Thunders, who is also dead.

 Dee Dee Ramone
Dee Dee sounds hoarse, drugged and stupid, the guitar has a chorusy sheen on it and is nearly impossible to hear over the dull bass and drums, and the songs themselves, although they're really really great songs, are nevertheless poorly composed and quite near invaluableless.
Dee Dee claimed to have gotten really into the electric blues at the time, but the only instance of this influence cropping up on the record is "Fix Yourself Up," a not-very-good song that sounds more like the Heartbreakers than the Ramones (that whole Johnny Thunders thing).
Dee Dee and Barbara trade off vocals, thank GOD, because Dee Dee's range is pretty limited to begin with but it sounds even worse after about half an hour, when he gives up and just starts TALKING the words instead of even trying to hit those heavenly Joey Ramone notes.
