Dee Murray (April 3, 1946 - January 15, 1992) was an English bassist, best known as a member of Elton John's original rock band.
Murray was born David Murray Oates in Southgate, London in 1946.
Murray and Olsson first appeared with Elton on the 1971 album Tumbleweed Connection and were key members of the band through its glory years, including the milestone album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Mr Murray was diagnosed eight years ago with malignant skin cancer, said Sarah McMullen, a family spokesperson.

I mean no disrespect to any of the talented bassists who have played with Elton John since Dee's departure from the band, but I have never heard anyone come close to what Dee did with Elton's songs.
Perhaps this is merely due to the quality of the songwriting (I don't think that Elton and Bernie have maintained the calibre of their "classic" period, but what artist has?), or the production.
Dee took that magic and used it to create some of the most wonderful bass parts I have ever heard on any artist's recordings.

Olsson subsequently joined the Spencer Davis Group, which was reeling from the defection of frontman Stevie Winwood; the gig was short-lived as Davis broke up the band before the end of 1969, but Olsson met bassist Dee Murray, who would become his favorite rhythm section partner.
He and Murray had been playing with Elton John on the young singer/songwriter's demos and they both joined his touring group in the spring of 1970.
Also that year, Olsson and Murray were invited to rejoin John's touring band, where they remained until 1984.
