		Any absence of studio sophistication in Deep Forest's live sound is compensated for by the music's celebratory mood and the concert's interactive, transcultural, communal environment.
		Deep Forest's first best-of compilation includes new versions of 'Sweet Lullaby' (2003 version featuring Ana Torroja), 'Will You Be Ready' (Be Prepared Remix) and 'Yuki Song' (2003 Remix), along with 'While The Earth Sleeps' and 'Freedom Cry'.
		For fans of the group this album may be a huge disappointment and it may be worth seeking out one of the 2 import versions that exists.

		The producer of the album is Eric Mouquet of Deep Forest and on this recording he collaborates with some of Brittany's best-known musicians, Tri Yann, Denez Prigent and Manu Lann Huel to create something that has both the native flavor of Breton traditional music and the energy and speed of modern dance music.
		Throughout the album, the singing and synthesizer backwashes are complemented with larger-than-life instrumental passages played on bagpipes, bombardes, violons and various whistles and pipes, all very competently and professionally played and greatly contributing to the "world music" sound of the album.
		The album opens with the track "Hebrides", which is the only song where the singing is only partially human and partially sampled and digitally processed (in fact not very unlike the Pygmy voices on the first Deep Forest album).

		The album may be well done for the style of music it is, but my ears have been so electronically trained that anything too "live" sounding seems harsh and rugged.

		When I first heard Fukai Mori, the title track that means "Deep Forest" in English, I imagined the vocalist to be tomboyish or grunge.
		I wasn't aware then that Do As Infinity was such a huge name in Japan, but what I know of Japanese pop girlies is that they usually sang bubblegum tunes with ultra-irritating high pitched nasal voices and that they bank more on their cutesy charms than actual talent.

		As someone who enjoys the first album (Deep Forest), and even parts of the second (Boheme), but detests the third (Comparsa), I had my doubts before listening to "Made in Japan." Unfortunately, these doubts were well founded.
		Most of Deep Forest's appeal comes from their meticulous manipulation of samples and the rich, spacious atmosphere of their recordings.
