Topic: Deep Impact (film)

Deep Impact (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While the film deals with the pending impact of a comet on planet Earth, the novel is focused on the pending impact of an asteroid that is discovered by an astronomer on Mars.
Deep Impact is generally considered to be more realistic than Armageddon, and has a stronger emphasis on the effect on society.
Deep Impact is also an extremely successful Japanese racehorse, that won the three major races in Japan in 2005.

 Cylon Alliance - Deep Impact
Unlike the When Worlds Collide scenario in which the film was originally based, the new script for Deep Impact portrayed the horror of the dangers of all life being wiped away in an unstoppable blast.
Realizing the potential of such a film, they rushed to produce Armageddon, a Bruce Willis action film whose script was so similar to that of Deep Impact to be totally beyond any chance of coincidence.
Much of the film focuses on the need to keep the impending disaster secret from the general population until enough progress can be made with countermeasures to keep the masses from panicking.

DEEP IMPACT will have you squirming in your seats at times, hoping beyond hope that the main characters are going to survive for a happy ending.
Deep Impact is a character study, but runs the gamut of emotions with courageous actions, heartfelt realizations, and sacrifices as some characters give up their lives to save others.
Deep Impact will start you thinking and you may realize just how fragile our planet is as a target in a cosmic shooting gallery.

Movie Review - Deep Impact - eFilmCritic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Said film revolved around the notion that a large planetary body was on a collision course with earth, and charted the efforts of humanity to build a spacecraft which would enable a select few to escape the impending threat.
Deep Impact, then, has a similar theme, one which is nothing particularly new to anyone who reads science-fiction or watched Armageddon in the same year.
The film chooses instead to map the progress of a disparate group of protagonists against a backdrop of ever-rising hopelessness, and does such a fine job of creating an oppressive atmosphere that by the final twenty minutes I was reaching for the anti-depressants which I'd been saving for the next Batman sequel.

DEEP IMPACT film review In Film Australia
Deep Impact is great as a Sci Fi, but terrible as a drama.
Robert Duvall, grasping "hero" status in the film, is the only other actor worthy of a mention – giving an amicable presence as an astronaut brought out of retirement to lead The Messiah.
The film comes nail bitingly close to being a worthwhile epic to add to this years blockbuster tally, but Mimi Lee seems never able to keep it in capable, focused control.

 DEEP IMPACT
DEEP IMPACT may be the winner this summer in the "asteroid hitting the Earth" movie race mainly because it'll reach the public first.
Though DEEP IMPACT claims to be the version that concentrates on this question, they shoot themselves in the foot with too many subplots and unnecessary characters.
The most compelling aspects of this film were the families and the lottery (to be one of the million people chosen to live underground in the new "ark").

Second, the two films of the same region were viewed under a stereoscope.
Two events in later decades increased the level of alarm: the increasing acceptance of Walter Alvarez' theory of dinosaur extinction being due to an impact event, and the 1994 observation of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashing into Jupiter.
It has been suggested that asteroids might be used in the future as a source of materials which may be rare or exhausted on earth (asteroid mining).

Deep Impact Movie Review by Anthony Leong
"Deep Impact", the latest tentpole production from Dreamworks SKG (following up their previous efforts "The Peacemaker" and "Mousehunt"), spent a lot of time in the eighties and early Nineties in development hell, as producing team Richard Zanuck and David Brown shopped it around the various studios.
The question that "Deep Impact" ponders on is 'what would you do if you knew the world was going to end in one year?', which is not unlike the question posed in "Titanic" and the grim nuclear holocaust tearjerker "On the Beach".
The emotional resonance is diluted in "Deep Impact" because we are only given quick glimpses of each character at various times, and so when the 'great moment of self-sacrifice and epiphany' comes, the impact is not as resounding, and you are left with what amounts to contrived pathos.

Deep Impact, too, features a carefully selected all-star cast and, like 1979's Meteor (not to mention the upcoming Armageddon), a plot concerning a large chunk of rock hurtling towards Mother Earth.
The difference here is that the deep impact of the title has more to do with the deep psychological impact surrounding the imminent disaster than the crash 'n' burn spectacle of it all.
Deep Impact gets a little preachy in the last twenty minutes, especially Morgan Freeman's closing presidential speech, and I lost count of how many times someone earnestly said "I love you" backed by a cherubic James Horner score that finally wears out its welcome.

What we get is essentially a 1 hr 45 min soap opera with a chunk of effects at the end, which has one very strange bit of humor as the wave flings a man off his park bench.
This film only works when Leder picks up the pace, with steadycam shots that are even a bit too dizzying.

village voice > film > Inside Deep Throat by J. Hoberman
The HBO documentary Inside Deep Throat doesn't have nearly that much conceptual elegance, but it too focuses on a reaction—namely the convulsions that shook the American body politic in the wake of the porn film Deep Throat.
Deep Throat was created by Gerard Damiano, an erstwhile Queens beautician, as a vehicle for the so-called Linda Lovelace; daughter of a New York City cop, she had been pimped by her husband for her extraordinary ability to suppress her gag response.
Deep Throat evoked, yet concealed, the source of female satisfaction; it privileged that satisfaction in the service of a phallocratic regime.

The films in question, Mimi Leder's Deep Impact and Michael Bay's Armageddon, are separated by two months, so the first should have a chance to run its course before the second reaches the screen.
The film opens with a modicum of promise by detailing the initial discovery of comet Wolf- Biederman by high school student Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood), who's at a telescope party with his local astronomy club.
As it is, the viewer sits patiently in his or her seat, enduring all sorts of perfunctory, "character building" moments while waiting for the special effects show to begin.

I especially liked the progression of Tea Leoni's character throughout the film, from self-interested business-woman to forgiving "Prodigal Daughter." The moments where she gave up her helicopter seat and spent her final moments with her dad on the beach were incredible.

Deep Impact, the spacecraft which carried and ejected the impactor, will take pictures and gather data from the collision and its aftermath, 133 million kilometres (83 million miles) from Earth.
The impact is expected to excavate a crater more than 25m (80ft) deep and 100m (330ft) across, ejecting ice, dust and gas and exposing "pristine" material.
Rick Grammier, Deep Impact project manager, likened the mission to "a bullet trying to hit another bullet with a third bullet in the right place at the right time".
