Deep Impact (space mission) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deep Impact is a NASA space probe designed to study the composition of the interior of the comet Tempel 1.
At 5:52 UTC on July 4, 2005, one section of the Deep Impact probe successfully impacted the comet's nucleus, excavating debris from the interior of the nucleus.
The comet is currently too dim to be seen with anything smaller than a large backyard telescope, but it was thought possible that the impact on 4 July could brighten the comet substantially, making it visible through binoculars toward the star Spica (visible even to the naked eye in areas with low light pollution).

Deep Impact Movie Review by Anthony Leong
The question that "Deep Impact" ponders on is 'what would you do if you knew the world was going to end in one year?', which is not unlike the question posed in "Titanic" and the grim nuclear holocaust tearjerker "On the Beach".
Within the confines of a two-hour movie, the amount of screen time that can be devoted to each character and their conflict is reduced to a bare minimum, which restricts the ability for the audience to sympathize, or even 'fall in love' with them.
The emotional resonance is diluted in "Deep Impact" because we are only given quick glimpses of each character at various times, and so when the 'great moment of self-sacrifice and epiphany' comes, the impact is not as resounding, and you are left with what amounts to contrived pathos.

Deep Impact, by far the more character-oriented tale of the two, loses a lot of the momentum it might've had by struggling through a muddled storyline; if anything, this cost it any chance it had to outdo Armageddon.
Deep Impact is really three stories in one, all of them mostly independent but all of them connected by the common threat of the asteroid's imminent collision with Earth.
For all its worth as an "event" movie, Deep Impact may be wide of the mark, and in two months' time, we'll hope for Armageddon to fill the void.
