LONDON (Reuters) - Sony BMG has withdrawn a Deep Purple album after complaints from lead singer Ian Gillan that it had been released without his knowledge, a spokesman for the label said on Tuesday.
He said the company had distributed about 2,000 copies of the recording of the rock band's live concert in the English city of Birmingham in 1993 in a small-scale re-release.
Deep Purple were one of the leading heavy metal bands of the 1970s, perhaps best known for their hit "Smoke on the Water."

Before Purple, Bolin's best-known recordings were made as a gun-for-hire on Billy Cobham's 1973 jazz fusion album, Spectrum, and on The James Gang's "Bang" (1973) and "Miami" (1974).
Deep Purple enjoyed success throughout the rest of the 1990s, releasing the harder-sounding Abandon in 1998, and touring with renewed relish, playing a setlist which was probably more adventurous and eclectic than ever before.
In 2003, Deep Purple released their first studio album in five years, the highly praised (but controversially titled) Bananas, and began touring in support of the album immediately.

The group's first release as Deep Purple, was the single "Hush." Written and originally recorded by American country artist Joe South, the song was later covered by Billy Joe Royal as a short, snappy pop/soul number.

 Deep Purple biography - 8notes.com
'Deep Purple' was the biggest hit written by pianist Peter De Rose (1900—1953), who broadcast, 1923 to 1939, with May Singhi as 'The Sweethearts of the Air' on the NBC radio network.
During this period, Deep Purple became one of the most popular hard rock acts in the world, releasing the highly influential and successful albums Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head (the latter featuring their most famous song, 'Smoke on the Water'), and the live album Made in Japan.
Subsequently, most of the past members of Deep Purple would go on to have considerable success in a number of bands including Rainbow (band), Whitesnake and Gillan, while there were a number of promoter-led attempts to get the band to reform especially with the revival of the hard rock market in the late 70s/early 80s.

PS: I want to address in advance this notion, seemingly held by many, that classic Deep Purple is "not heavy metal." Defenders of this notion often cite the fact that Purple keyboardist Jon Lord says that he had never heard the term "heavy metal" until the early 80's.
