While Black Sabbath's early albums explored the darker edges of rock as a precursor to the occult-inspired Metal bands of the 80s and 90s and Led Zeppelin betrayed traces hippiedom in Robert Plant's lyrics, Deep Purple occupied the middle ground with a more accessible rock sound.
Album closer, No One Came is one of Deep Purple's finest tracks, the essence of what's great about early 70s Hard Rock distilled into six minutes and twenty five seconds of pumping sonic brilliance.
The beauty of this album, and Deep Purple in general, is that each band member is an extremely gifted musician and is given sufficient space to experiment and show off without becoming self-indulgent.

As nice as it would be to be paid royalties forever, thanks to the massive popularity of a small handful of songs, being a classic rock icon does have its drawbacks, especially for those artists who are unwilling to rest on their laurels.
Such is the case with Deep Purple, who describe their conundrum in eloquent, dryly funny fashion on "MTV", from their umpteenth studio album, Rapture of the Deep.

From the opening bars of "And the Address," it's clear that they'd gotten down the fundamentals of heavy metal from day one, and at various points the electricity and the beat just surge forth in ways that were startlingly new in the summer of 1968.
