Deep Purple - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deep Purple is the name of a British rock group, and is also the name of a song composed by Peter De Rose, from which the band borrowed its name.
Subsequently, most of the past members of Deep Purple would go on to have considerable success in a number of other bands including Rainbow, Whitesnake and Gillan, while there were a number of promoter-led attempts to get the band to reform, especially with the revival of the hard rock market in the late 70s/early 80s.....
Deep Purple enjoyed success throughout the rest of the 1990s, releasing Abandon in 1998, and touring with renewed relish, playing a setlist which was probably more adventurous and eclectic than ever before.

The ten-minute cover of Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep - Mountain High" must be heard to be believed, while the six-minute cover of "We Can Work It Out" can't be believed even after you hear it: both tracks open with aimless, rumbling instrumental pieces that bear no clear relationship to the actual song.

Rock Of Ages: Hall Of Fame - Deep Purple
Having adopted the Deep Purple name (apparently inspired by Ritchie's grandmother's favorite song) following a brief Scandinavian tour in April 1968, the quintet began recording their debut album, which they patterned on USA group Vanilla Fudge.
"Shades of Deep Purple" thus included dramatic rearrangements of well-known songs, including a faithful cover of Hendrix's version of "Hey Joe" and the Joe South-penned, Billy Joe Royal hit "Hush", the latter hitting US #4 in 1968 but not troubling the UK chart-compilers one bit.

The three late 60's albums certainly nowadays act as interesting documents in the development of a band who at the time weren't quite sure where they were heading but whose finest hours were inevitably still to come.
After recording this album the band must have realised that if they were going to survive and progress then something had to give, Evans & Simper were that something, Gillian & Glover stepped in and the rest is history.

 Deep Purple - The Biography
Having adopted the Deep Purple name (apparently inspired by Ritchie's grandmother's favorite song) following a brief Scandinavian tour in April 1968 (where they played as Roundabout, "in case they flopped"), the quintet began recording their debut album, which they patterned on USA group Vanilla Fudge.
The departures of Gillan and Glover robbed Deep Purple of an expressive frontman and imaginative arranger, although David Coverdale (born 22 September 1949, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Lancashire, England; vocals) and Glenn Hughes (born 21 August 1952, Penkridge, Staffordshire; ex-Trapeze, bass and vocals) brought a new impetus to the act.
Acknowledged by aficionados as the "classic" Deep Purple line-up (forever onwards known as Mark II), the reshaped quintet made its album debut on the grandiose "Concerto For Group And Orchestra", scored by Lord and recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold (later sir Malcolm).

Deep Purple to take the stage what once was a metal bench to sit on became a perch to stand on while others who may have arrived later try to fill in any vacant holes in the crowd.

 MDWeb - Deep Purple's "In Rock" (1970)
This is my favorite Deep purple album- the heaviest, rawest, most consistent, most daring - simply the most incredible 42+ minutes of hard rock ever committed to vinyl!
Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice finally found the singer and bassist to take the band to the next level; the Mk I albums, especially their third album, Deep Purple, surely hinted at the power of In Rock, but the band needed Ian and Roger to complement their new, heavier style.
A brilliant 4+ minutes of hard rock fury; they could not have picked a better song to lead this album off with.
