Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deep Space Nine was well received by critics, with TV Guide describing it as "the best acted, written, produced, and altogether finest" Trek series.
The very nature of the show (being set on a space station rather than a starship) fostered a rich assortment of recurring characters, and it was not unheard of for "secondary" characters to play as much or more of a role in an episode as the regular cast.
Deep Space Nine's first officer, Kira Nerys, was formerly an underground resistance leader responsible for many acts of sabotage and subversion and is required in her new role to learn diplomacy and patience.

 Bambooweb: Star Trek
Deep Space Nine sheds some of the utopian themes that embodied the previous versions of Star Trek, and focuses more on war, religion, political compromise, and other modern issues.
As early as 1993-94, when Star Trek: Deep Space Nine failed to generate the high ratings of its predecessor, magazines such as Entertainment Weekly predicted the demise of the franchise.
The series focuses on the starship Excelsior, and its home base, Deep Space 12, as they fend off attacks from a powerful new alien race, The Grey, and mediate disputes between such races as the Tholians, Cardassians, Bajorans, the Son'a and the Breen.

Deep Space Nine #1 "Emissary" brings forth the beginning of Star Trek's best and most controversial series to the franchise.
This doesn't matter though, because in the end, the very principles that make up Star Trek Deep Space Nine; its character conflicts and its dealing with certain aspects not dealt with on the other series ultimately makes it the most beloved by the fans that have stuck with it.

And it is. A great deal of the show deals with the politics of the 24th century.
Deep Space Nine asks a lot of tough questions about the nature of the Federation, the Romulans, the Klingons, and it isn't afraid to admit it doesn't always have the right answers.
So the novels, overseen by editor Marco Palmeri, have taken on the collective title 'The DS9 Relaunch', and are considered to be an informal eighth season of the show.

TrekWeb.com - Pocket Books Returns for Second Visit to the WORLDS OF DEEP SPACE NINE
With such a rich tapestry already weaved since 1993, DEEP SPACE NINE has, in my opinion, held the richest of possibilities in all of the STAR TREK universe, and it's a tapestry that I'm proud to say continues in Pocket Books' latest volumes.
What Kym presents in "Fragments and Omens" are two strongly balanced tales, one of a planet's political and military future, the other of a young man's growth and progression into adulthood, yet both firmly planted in the theme, as in "Unjoined", of essential and necessary change.
While the second volume in the WORLDS OF STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE series may not answer as many questions as the first volume did, it does delve further into the Trill and Bajoran cultures and brings many new details to light, making for compelling reading through and through.
