January 19, 2004 1:51 PM Deep Spring College is a prestigious all-male (currently) college almost nobody has heard of.
It is located on an isolated ranch in Deep Springs Valley and the only way there is a two hour greyhound bus ride that stops at the Cottontail Ranch Brothel, followed by a one hour ride on the college's own transportation.
Back when I was in college, my advisor taught there for one of their terms (which, IIRC, was about 6-7 weeks, with 6 terms/year.) Since this was right when I was supposed to be starting a summer's worth of research, he arranged for me to go out there and visit for two weeks.

Deep Springs graduates often applied to and were admitted into Ivies.
One of my son's friends chose it over HYPS (to which he was also admitted) because he is deeply interested in politics and is a great athlete as well as an academic star.

For the next two months or so, I worked as a clerk (doing typical secretarial stuff such as typing transcripts) in the college's office.
Some of the irrigation-lines were large-wheeled contraptions moved by a motor in the middle (rotation did the trick); a few lines comprised many approximately fifteen-foot-long two- or three-inch-diameter pipe-segments which needed to be moved by hand.
