Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) is a type of Deep Submergence Vehicle used for rescue of downed submarines and clandestine missions.
While DSRV is the term most often used by the United States Navy, some nations have other designations for their vehicles.
The mode of deployment for these submersibles is: fly the vehicle to the port closest to the incident; attach the vehicle to a host submarine; the host submarine travels to the incident site; rescue.

DSRV type vessels are equipped with docking chambers to allow personnel ingress/egress via a manhole.
In a DSV/DSRV type vehicle the passanger compartment and the ballast tank functionality is incorporated into a single structure to afford more habitable space (for up to 24 people in case of a DSRV rescue vehicle).
All DSV vehicles are dependent upon a surface support ship or a mother submarine, that can piggyback or tow them (in case of the NR-1) to the scene of operations.

Once it arrives, the DSRV is transported via its special land transport vehicle and taken to the staging port for rendezvous with a specially equipped mother submarine.
After the DSRV has located the submarine’s rescue/escape trunk and has landed on the rescue seat, the water in the DSRV mating skirt is pumped overboard or is vented to tanks on the DSRV.

Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle - DSRV
Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles perform rescue operations on submerged, disabled submarines of the U.S. Navy or foreign navies.
In the beginning it was planned to built twelve of those vehicles, but since 1966, the costs went up and when the Navy realized that such a vehicle would be able to rescue 24 and not only 16 people, six vehicles were cancelled.
In January 1970 the first of the two DSRVs was launched in Sunnyvale, Calif. The first diving tests of DSRV 1 were conducted in summer of 1970 by commander P. Raetzman and pilot R. Ross.

The DSRV is designed for quick deployment in the event of a submarine accident and is transportable by truck, aircraft, ship, or by specially configured attack submarines.
The DSRV rescue system was developed by the U.S. Navy in response to the loss of its nuclear submarine USS Thresher and all its crew in 1963.
At the time, submarine operating depths greatly exceeded the capabilities of contemporary rescue systems, and the Navy's Deep Submergence Systems Project contracted with Lockheed Missiles and Space, Co. and Draper Laboratory (then the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Instrumentation Laboratory) to produce two deep diving rescue submarines, the first of which was launched in 1970.

The conclusion reached was the the Remora/Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) style of outside intervention and rescue was not optimal and the the self-rescue was the only reasonable approach, for a number of reasons.
By moving the base of rescue from the surface to the DISSUB itself, the difficulty and time-consuming operations of locating the DISSUB and placing the rescue assets in secure position above it are eliminated.
Since the rescue vessel is not required to carry DSRV style hardware nor the associated handling system, it becomes a means of recovering and transporting crew of the DISSUB and virtually any vessel of opportunity will serve.
