Topic: Deep focus

In the News (Sun 27 Dec 09)

The Little Foxes (1941) at Reel Classics: Screen Cap Gallery, Page 3
Deep focus is a photographic technique by which all objects in front of a camera, both near and far from its physical placement, are sharply defined.
First, whereas shallow focus (in which one part of the screen is in focus and the rest is blurred) draws the viewer's attention to whatever element of the scene is in focus, deep focus is much more ambiguous -- allowing the viewer to choose for herself which parts of the scene to concentrate on.
At Wyler 's request, when Horace has his heart attack, Toland switches from deep focus to shallow focus, subjectively drawing the viewer's attention, not to the figure of Horace struggling up the stairs to find his medicine, but instead to Regina's face and her reaction to the struggle she knows is taking place behind her.

 Part 3: Cinematography
Unlike deep space, deep focus requires that elements at very different depths of the image both be in focus.
While deep focus may be used occasionally, some auteurs use it consistently for they believe it achieves a truer representation of space.
Focus is the quality (the "sharpness" of an object as it is registered in the image) and depth of field refers to the extent to which the space represented is in focus.

AGU Web Site: Deep Bolivian Earthquake
By analyzing the frequency oscillations from deep events, scientists have been able determine the density and related properties of rock in various parts of the mantle.
Scientists have thought for some time that conventional faults or brittle failure faulting cannot form in rock subjected to the conditions found at the depths of the Bolivian quake, which occurred where the Nazca plate is being subducted beneath the mantle of the South American continent.
Determining the geometry of the fault plane is another way that scientists attempt to decipher the puzzle of deep quakes, in particular of the physical mechanism.

Deep focus can, of course, be done in color (as we all know), and sitcoms are living proof that folks can blast away @ 5.6 and 8 until the cows come home.
Deep focus allows the viewer to see the scene somewhat how our eye sees the world, everything pretty much in focus front to back.
Believe me, it's challenging to be pulling focus on a 100mm anamorphic at T2.0 pushing in to minimum focus on an actor and also have to open the Panavision mount, yank the lens, wiggle it around, and put it back, plus find the focus again.

Cunningham   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Deep focus and deep space, used extensively albeit erratically throughout the century, was nevertheless put to a series of specifically psychological uses in certain films of the 1940s.
Deep focus and deep space are used, as is camera movement, to articulate clearly delineated shifts in psychological interaction.
Throughout these crucial scenes deep focus and staging in depth is choreographed succinctly with camera movement to establish, through spatial arrangement and variation, the psychology (and incipient psychopathology) of character interaction.

In this case a focus puller under the director’s command, simply pulls focus so the object or character (Mark Petrie) that was in focus, goes out of focus, and what wasn’t in focus (the vampires) becomes the focal point of the framed image.
When both hands are in focus, but do not share the same physical plane, the distance that separates them is referred to as depth of field, or depth of focus.
Deep focus originally came to be when films were more like filmed plays and fl-and-white film was the only choice of stock.

USGS Earthquake Hazards Program: Determining the Depth of an Earthquake   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Shallow earthquakes are between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes, 70 - 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes, 300 - 700 km deep.
The existence of deep-focus earthquakes was confirmed in 1931 from studies of the seismograms of several earthquakes, which in turn led to the construction of travel-time curves for intermediate and deep earthquakes.
The most obvious indication on a seismogram that a large earthquake has a deep focus is the small amplitude, or height, of the recorded surface waves and the uncomplicated character of the P and S waves.

Although much significance has been placed on the apparent rupture of the great 1994 Bolivia earthquake and the 1994 Fiji Island earthquake through the seismically active portion of the deep slab, we beleive that rupture of most deep events is confined to the slab core.
However this is not likely for events which contain large gaps in their slip distribution since it would be improbable for a shear instability to re-initiate quickly over distances of tens of km.

In fact, you too should be able to improve your ability to respond accurately through coordinating the period of intense concentration on a target and the duration of the time you fixate on the target before you respond, Janelle said.
Two factors were tracked and measured in all of the shooters: quiet-eye duration, or the length of time between the shooter's final focus on his target and the initiation of the shot; and brain wave activity, which compared the level of activation of the right and left hemispheres of the brain.
Janelle found not only that the more-successful shooters focused longer on their targets, but also that the experts had much higher levels of alpha waves in the left hemispheres of their brains, which means their analytical thought processes had been temporarily suppressed.

Deep focus can be a powerful tool for a director who knows how to use it effectively (like Orson Welles.)
Aesthetically, there is a reason why deep focus was more popular in b&w photography than it is today in color photography.
Color is another layer of information on top of the tone and texture of a b&w image, and in narrative filmmaking, controlling the flow of information is very important.
