The accident investigation board conducted an exhaustive investigation of the aerodynamic, stability, and control characteristics of the BAC 111 and concluded that the cause of the accident was an unrecoverable deep-stall phenomenon, which was precipitated by the geometric and aerodynamic characteristics of the configuration.
For example, deep stall was found to be responsible for crashes experienced with the Hawker Siddeley Trident transport.
The fourth stall test was made at an altitude of 11,600 ft in the landing configuration and with the stall warning and recovery systems inoperative.

What happens when you deep stall a canard? - Canard Aviation Forum   (Site not responding. Last check: )
When I hear 'deep stall' for a canard aircraft, I assumed it was both canard and wing stalled, and then I mistakenly threw in 'cg at or beyond aft limits'.
The commonly accepted definition in the canard world of a "deep stall" is a stall in which both the canard and main wing are stalled, and the situation becomes stable and unrecoverable.
I always understood that the dangerous condition incorrectly called deep stall was when the CG aft and the canard light enough loaded that a condition could be reached where the canard would keep flying, at a high AOA, and the main wing would stall.

Spoilers 78 on the stabilizer 68 are actuated to cause the stabilizer to stall.
This induces deep stall of the wing 64; and lacking lift from both wing and stabilizer, the airplane 60 translates downward through a near vertical trajectory.

About Canard Aircrafts   (Site not responding. Last check: )
As is the case with aircrafts in conventional configurations, stalling with CG too far aft can lead to a disaster.
On a canard aircraft, main wing stall is also referred to as "deep stall".
Since stall is a function of angle of attack, it is very important to keep the relative incidence between the main wing and the canard during construction.

A Tale of Two T-Tails Air Safety Week - Find Articles   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A Deep Stall occurs when the turbulent wake of a stalled mainplane "blanks" the horizontal stabilizer, rendering the elevators ineffective and preventing the aircraft from recovering.
For T-tails, the deep stall is the equivalent of the helicopter's vortex ring condition, as they can both generate very high rates of descent in a near normal wings-level flight attitude.
Despite the stick-shaker operating its warning, this led to a series of stalls and eventually a deep stall from which recovery was impossible.

Code One Magazine Online: July 1986 - Recovering From Deep Stalls And Departures
If during your upright deep stall recovery you continue to hold forward pressure as the nose starts down, it is possible to pitch right over on your back and end up in an inverted deep stall.
If the deep stall is very oscillatory and you pull out of phase (that is, the first pull starts as the nose is just starting down instead of being at its lowest point) or you do not hold the stick long enough in either direction, it is possible that it won’t recover the first time.
The problem was that these deep stalls were very oscillatory about all three axes, which caused the yaw rate limiter to work hard to prevent a spin.

 Generic Intro to Deep Stall/Spin
Aircraft emergency deceleration parachute systems and deep stall/spin recovery parachutes are very similar in design and execution; however, they serve distinctly different purposes as indicated by their names.
For example, a deep stall system will generally have a smaller diameter chute but a much longer riser than the spin recovery system; whereas, an emergency deceleration parachute system will have a fairly small, but very strong, canopy to withstand the high dynamic pressure at deployment.

Cross-Controlled Stalls - The Skidded Turn
I've heard many different iterations of the definition of a stall in my dealings with students, but the bottom line is (with the very rare exception of a tailplane stall) that a stall is nothing more than exceeding critical angle of attack (AOA) of the main wing.
Even worse is that since the stall is going to occur at or near the wingtip, the left aileron is involved in the stall almost immediately and that means reverse aileron effect may be involved from the outset of the stall.
Skidded stalls tend to be nasty because they tuck "under the bottom" at the stall, as we have seen.
