  Ohio's 2004 Deer Outlook
Though the total statewide deer harvest in 2003-04 was a 4 percent drop from the 2002-03 hunting seasons (which set the new state record), this was one of the two districts that showed an increase, rising 7 percent, a 41 percent improvement over the average of the previous four years.
The leading counties for deer harvests in the district are at the extreme northern and southern ends, though the numbers are heavily weighted in the south.
The bulk of the 2003-04 deer harvest in District Five was in a four-county block in the southern tip of the 17-county district that accounted for very nearly half of the district's total deer kill.

Deer harvests continue to reflect growing whitetail populations statewide, and hunters can expect excellent opportunities on public and private lands in 2005.
Similar declines in total deer take were experienced across all of the major hunting zones in New York in 2004, but there is an explanation for the precipitous drop.
"The recent declines in the deer take were a result of weather, hunting conditions and specific management actions intended to reduce deer populations from the high levels of 2002 and 2003 and bring them closer to manageable levels in the many areas where deer were overabundant," said DEC acting commissioner Denise M. Sheehan.
