The story of Cannibal Ox is inextricably linked with the story of former Company Flow producer/leader El-P and his imprint Def Jux (later Definitive Jux, after intervention by original rap label Def Jam Records).
After Company Flow enjoyed their critical high water mark with Funcrusher Plus in 1997 and the outfit began to unravel, "undie" (underground independent) hip-hop was in need of new blood, and Cannibal Ox helped provide it.
El-P, who is also their Brooklyn landlord, encouraged them to work as a duo and they subsequently toured Europe with Company Flow on the Little Johnny tour in 1998.

Pin made a throwaway comment to me a few weeks back that the most recent Def Jux releases seemed to bump a hell of a lot more than the labels opening few full lengths.
I was quite surprised at HHC's turnaround actually, having spent the last few years attacking nearly all post-'Cold Vein' Def Jux releases.
The one Def Jux MC who I don't really love as much as I used to is Lif, especially because Ak just rips shit up on The Perceptionists stuff.
