  Defecation Motor Program
Defecation is achieved by periodically activating a stereotyped sequence of muscle contractions (Croll and Smith 1978).
Defecation periodicity is nearly constant in animals assayed at temperatures ranging from 19°C to 30°C (Liu and Thomas 1994).
Presumably, the rate of defecation is the major determinant of the residence time of food in the gut, and this residence time must influence the thoroughness of digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Defecation   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Defecation, or feceation, is the act of eliminating solid or semisolid waste material from the digestive tract.
During defecation the chest muscles, diaphragm, abdominal wall muscles, and pelvic diaphragm all exert pressure on the digestive tract and respiration temporarily ceases as the lungs push the chest diaphragm down in order to exert pressure.
Death has been known to occur in cases where defecation causes the blood pressure to rise enough to cause the rupture of an aneurysm or to dislodge blood clots (see thrombosis).

Defecation is the act or process by which organisms eliminate solid or semisolid waste material (feces) from the digestive tract via the anus.
During defecation the chest muscles, diaphragm, abdominal wall muscles, and pelvic diaphragm all exert pressure on the digestive tract and ventilation temporarily ceases as the lungs push the chest diaphragm down in order to exert pressure.
Once trained, loss of control causing fecal incontinence may be caused by physical injury (such as damage to the anal sphincter that may result from an episiotomy), intense fright, inflammatory bowel disease, impaired water absorption in the colon (see diarrhea), and psychological or neurological factors.

Intestinal motility: evaluation and treatment of constipation: Currents: UI Health Care
Dyssynergic (obstructive) defecation is characterized by difficulty or inability to expel stool from the anorectum.
Slow transit constipation is defined primarily on the basis of symptoms alone, whereas dyssynergic defecation is defined both on the basis of symptoms and objective physiological criteria.
Slow transit constipation may coexist with dyssynergic defecation; thus, assessment of colonic transit together with anorectal function is useful.

In particular, defecation (the passage of stool) is considered to be a normal part of being a human being.
In addition, the fact that control of defecation is a normal developmental process during childhood makes the diagnosis and management of these problems particularly difficult and challenging.
The inability to defecate in children is usually due either to a problem with formation of the anus (anorectal malformations) or with the inability of the colon to push the stool from one end to the other (Hirschsprung's disease and other motility disorders).

An anal fissure is prevented from healing by the regular passage of hard stools and pain-related anal spasm during defecation, which impinges the hard stool against the fresh wound.
History should begin with a detailed inquiry into the patient's normal pattern of defecation, the frequency with which the current problem differs from the normal pattern (eg, "missing a day"), the perceived hardness of the stools, whether the patient strains in order to defecate, and any other symptom the patient may be experiencing.
Prescribing long-term laxatives for a period of several weeks may be necessary in order to force the child to defecate daily until the cause of the anorectal pain is resolved and the fecal retention behavior is unlearned.

 Gastroenterology Grand Rounds
In most people with obstructed defecation, there is an inappropriate contraction (or failed relaxation) of the puborectalis muscle and of the external anal sphincter during attempts to defecate.
During normal defecation, the intrapelvic pressure is raised by contraction of the diaphragm and abdominal musculature, while at the same time the pelvic floor is relaxed.
It entails simulated defecation by means of a water filled balloon introduced in the rectum; this is then slowly withdrawn, while patients are asked to concentrate on the sensations evoked by the balloon and to try to ease its passage.

Defecation Disorders After Surgery for Hirschsprung's Disease
This cycle of painful defecation and withholding behavior continues until the child experiences a sustained period of painless defecation.
The child may be having a problem with misunderstanding the signals coming from the bowels to the brain, but restoring the brain’s recognition of normal sensations is part of the child’s responsibility as he acquires normal toilet behaviors.
Over time the urge to defecate may change to a pain perception, so that the child no longer recognizes when it is time to have a bowel movement.

These laxatives can destroy the defecation reflex as their purgative action on the colon prevents the normal stimulation and operation of the defecation reflex.

Determining the Indexing Possibilities of Defecation Rate for Wild Turkeys in South Central Nebraska
Unfortunately, little is currently known about the defecation rate and thus its indexing possibilities for wild turkey.  The objective of this experiment is to accurately determine the defecation rate of the wild turkey using a controlled setting.
The defecation of wild turkeys was measured frequently during the study period of September 1- 15 October 2002 on the captive wildlife site.  A total of 11 turkeys was placed in two pens, seven in one pen, four in another.  These were domestic fl Spanish and red bourbon turkeys.
It appears that defecation rate could provide a viable indexing tool for wild turkeys in the fall and winter of the year.
