Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was established in 1958 by amalagamating Defence Science Organisation and some of the technical development establishments.
Research and development activities at DRDO cover important demarcated disciplines like aeronautics, rockets and missiles, electronics and instrumentation, combat vehicles, engineering, naval systems, armament technology including explosives research, terrain research, advanced computing, artificial intelligence,robotics, works study, systems analysis and life sciences including high-altitude agriculture, physiology, food technology and nuclear medicine.
In addition to undertaking research and development activities, DRDO also assists the Services by rendering technical advice regarding formulation of requirements, evaluation of systems to be acquired, fire and explosive safety and mathematical and statistical analysis of operational problems.

Apparently buoyed by the recent breakthroughs in radar technology by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the CCS cleared the project for an indigenous AWACS at an hour-long meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Though the minister did not not spell out the aircraft on which the new AWACS would be mounted, his announcement of ratification of a defence agreement with Brazil assumes significance as Brazilian aviation company Embraer is one of the few countries to have the AWACS technology.

The PTA and UAV research and support to the ALH being built at HAL and LCA which is controlled from the ADA also at Bangalore is provided by this laboratory.
This lab was responsible for developing the Indian ASWACS platform that crashed on 10 Jan 1999.

India is planning to launch a military satellite soon to cater exclusively to the requirements of the armed forces, scientific adviser to the defence minister Dr V K Aatre said on Friday.
Disclosing this in Bangalore, Dr Aatre said the Defence Research and Development Organisation was working on the project, and the satellite would be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation.
Aatre also disclosed that the DRDO was planning to recruit 700 scientists and engineers at the entry level.
