The Secretary of State for Defence is the senior United Kingdom government minister in charge of the Ministry of Defence.
The post was created on 1 April 1964 and combined the former cabinet positions of First Lord of the Admiralty, Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for Air.
The separate offices of the Admiralty, War Office and the Air Ministry were abolished and their functions transferred to an expanded Ministry of Defence.

The meetings of the North Atlantic Council are chaired by the Secretary General of NATO and, when decisions have to be made, action is agreed upon on the basis of unanimity and common accord.

The bench served notice on the federal defence and interior secretaries to appear in person on Monday and directed Deputy Attorney General Tariq Mehmood Khokar to prepare a medical report about the health condition of Imran Munir, and provide record of proceedings of the court martial.
