Defence licences are cancelled if the holder’s civilian licence is cancelled in any state of territory, or if the holder’s employment with the Department of Defence is terminated.

According to the Explanatory Memorandum, ‘[d]efence contractors and defence employees will still be required to comply with all the other State and Territory road transport laws that apply to them, such as the requirement to hold a valid licence and comply with the road rules’.

Jones Day - Publications - Honest and Reasonable Mistake: Is it Still a Defence to Construction Site Safety ...
The Court held that the magistrate had not properly considered the contractor’s available defence of honest and reasonable belief and his rejection of that defence was without a proper evidential basis.
Being the responsible contractor, Hyundai were thus prosecuted for breaching Regulation 38B(1) of the CSSR on the basis of their failure "to take adequate steps to prevent any person on the site from falling a height of two metres or more." Hyundai were convicted by the magistrate; they appealed against conviction.
In the Chun Wo case, the question of whether the common law defence was available in respect of a breach of Regulations 43(b) and 51, as a matter of construction, was left undecided by the Judge.

In 2003, the five largest defence contractors all generated significant boosts in revenue from prime government contracts, according to figures from the Department of Defence.
While companies such as Halliburton and Bechtel earn billions of dollars on reconstruction contracts for Iraq, defence contractors that supply the military with the weapons of war have reaped the benefits of a military budget that has soared during the Bush administration, the WPI report said.
Some defence industry experts, however, dismiss the notion that major defence contractors greatly profited from the use of such weapons, calling them small potatoes in the overall revenue of companies such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing.

The American contractor blamed for huge delays and cost blowouts on a $1 billion RAN helicopter project says it is only months away from sorting out the mess.
An Australian defence department review, due to report by the end of June, may recommend the grounded Seasprite choppers be replaced at a cost of at least another $1 billion.
The navy bought 11 of the helicopters from US defence contractor Kaman Aerospace for $1 billion in 1997, but the Seasprites have been plagued by technical problems and have never been fully operational.

Independent Contractor Defence in Occupiers Liability Claims
The Chambers Judge held that it was reasonable for OUC to have an independent contractor perform the lawn and grounds maintenance on the campus, as the work was not inherently dangerous such that it could not be delegated, and there was no statutory public duty on OUC to prevent it from contracting out such work.
The Plaintiff did not take issue with the trial judge's conclusions that it was reasonable for OUC to hire an independent contractor or that reasonable care had been exercised in the selection of the contractor.
The lesson to be taken from the Grochowich case is that insurers relying on an independent contractor defence under section 5 of the Occupiers Liability Act must ensure that evidence of the occupier’s supervision of the contractor is properly developed in the first instance, with emphasis on matters of safety.

AM - DMO employees under cloud over payments to defence contractor
Two Defence procurement officers breached Government rules when they contributed their own money to a defence contractor who was struggling financially.
One of the Defence employees linked to the improper payments was also linked to the decision to give that same company lucrative taxpayer funded Defence contracts, partly on the basis that it was in sound financial shape.
For instance, Defence sources say a tender in the '90s, which specified the use of a certain machine to make boots, gave some companies an unfair advantage over others, an advantage which lasted for years and was worth millions and millions of dollars.

For a company whose bread and butter is the defence of the realm, defending its own integrity has, in recent years, become as much a part of its business.

National Defence, Public Works and Government Services Canada, and the contractor have since determined that there was about $89 million of training missed from the start of the program until the time the contractor was able to meet its obligations.
National Defence remains confident that the new basic flying training option, being developed in a complementary contract, contains measures to reduce the financial impact of fluctuations in pilot enrollment and employs the lessons learned from the NFTC project that were recommended by the Auditor General.

The largest US manufacturer is Lockheed Martin, formed by Lockheed's merg-er with Martin Marietta and Loral, that has annual defence sales of some $20 billion and is as The Economist recently noted, "the world's largest defence contractor".
The second trend is increased international collaboration in the acquisition of major defence systems, despite the problems of con-flicting national requirements, cost over-runs and delayed delivery dates, as experienced by the Eurofighter 2000, a collaborative project between Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain.
The continuing ethnic and religious con-flicts in the former Yugoslavia and elsewhere, including Africa, are creating increasing politi-cal pressure on western and allied govern-ments to send military forces to intervene in these conflicts to reduce civilian casualties.

According to project details posted by Defence, a contractor will be brought in to support the existing PeopleSoft PMKeyS system for at least two years.
Defence said earlier this month that the decision to restart the $100 million upgrade would delay the project by at least 12 months as it solicited new bids from the two software makers and went through a two-stage contract approval process.

Until former brigadier-general Gordon O'Connor was elected in 2004 and named defence critic, he had for years been a registered lobbyist working for the public-affairs giant Hill and Knowlton and specializing in advising defence manufacturers on how to secure government contracts.
From 1996 to 2004, he was an official lobbyist for defence contractor BAE Systems, which last June took over another of his clients, United Defense.
It is not unusual for retired military officers to take jobs connected to the defence industry, but it is rare for a defence lobbyist to jump so quickly to the post of defence minister.
