Defender (football) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In association football (soccer), a defender is a player whose position of play is behind the midfielders and first and foremost provide support to the goalkeeper.
The job of the centre backs or central defenders is to stop opposing players, particularly the strikers, from scoring, and to bring the ball out from their penalty area.
The taller defenders tend to move forward to the opposing team's penalty box when their team takes corner kicks or free kicks where scoring with one's head is a possibility.

Football is played predominantly with the feet, but players may use any part of their body except their hands and arms to propel the ball; the exceptions to this are the goalkeepers, who are the only players allowed to handle the ball in the field of play.
Football is played at a professional level all over the world, and millions of people regularly go to a football stadium to follow their home team, whilst millions more avidly watch the game on television.
Football is generally a free-flowing game with the ball in play at all times except when it has left the field of play over a boundary line, or play has been stopped by the referee.

My local team (Bristol City, third tier in England, but wages to match Superliga) just had a 6'8" defender, tall skinny white guy, on trial, his name is being kept secret, but he was Portuguese and had to go back to play for his club Sunday.
Anyway, this 6'8" guy isn't Hugo Rodrigues, I know that for definate, because I asked about him too as our manager signed Rodrigues at his old club, but the scouts involved said it definately wasn't him but couldn't say who it was.
I think Rodrigues is only 6'5" or 6'6", this guy is definately 6'8" and would be the tallest player in British football if we sign him, however the deal is on hold as he is under contract in Portugal and went back to play a liga game today.
