The best-known and most prominent members of the Defenders are Doctor Strange, the Hulk, Namor the Sub-Mariner, the Silver Surfer, Nighthawk, Valkyrie, and Hellcat.

All incarnations are essentially based on the DC Comics character Batman (although Nighthawk II strayed considerably from that template).
After the Defenders (comics) Defenders defeated the Over-Mind and freed the Squadron and their world, the Squadron began the Utopia Program, intending to become the leaders of the reconstructed Earth.
Among these were the Earth-616 version of Kyle Richmond, an egotistical and wealthy playboy who, unlike comics' archetype archetypical playboy Batman, frequently drank and womanized whose father had to pay hush money to protect his son's name after a drunk-driving accident that injured a woman.

Defenders - PopMatters Comic Book Review
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, there appeared a number of comics that could only be called "quirky." They didn't fit into any particular genre, and there was a genuine confusion as to why they existed in the first place.
Marvel Comics, by comparison, was publishing books by the bushelfull; they had escaped from their restrictive distribution agreement of the 1960s and the liberalization of the Comics Code resulted in the Marvel's '70s explosion.
Defenders managed to remain an underground fan favorite for many years, eventually ending it's run with a very respectable 152 issues.

I've seen the world taken over countless times in comics, but this is one of the rare times when the heroes left untouched have been so ill-suited to the role of saving the Earth from it's conquerors.
The action is dynamically rendered, as the scenes of the Defenders battling their way through the swarm of A.I.M. goons are visually exciting, but their later encounter with the giant, reality-altering monster is this issue's highlight.

This is the premise behind Marvel's new four-issue "Defenders" mini-series by the acclaimed creators of DC's "Formerly Known as the Justice League" mini-series: Keith Giffen, J. Marc DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire.
The Defenders are some of Marvel's most powerful characters and Giffen and DeMatteis have crafted a story where they are pushed to their limits.
A lot of people seem to think that Giffen hates and resents DC Comics and "Identity Crisis" because of the death of Sue Dibny, who was a prominent character in his "Justice League" stories from the 1980s.

Working on a book like Defenders, where we’re spinning a new direction for old, established characters, finding the right tone for each character is a little more difficult.
As for the themes in Defenders: Sometimes you set off on a creative journey with a specific theme in mind, sometimes not.
In the case of Defenders, I’m not thinking about themes, and I don’t think Keith is either.

Throughout the comics we find out that the stories work because the group is made up of anti-social malcontents who have no interest team spirit.
These comics are firmly entrenched in the “Marvel house style” of the time with its grimacing heroes and explosions of verbiage.
It all depends on your personal tolerance for such a style (I’m the kind that’s quite enamored with it) but the comics here are of a much better example of that style than most other comics of the time.
