The U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) prior to the 2004 Defense Authorization Bill September-October 2003 State of the Agency was known as the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA).
NIMA was established on October 1, 1996, by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency Act of 1996.
The creation of "NGA" ("NIMA") centralized responsibility for imagery and mapping, representing a fundamental step toward achieving the Department of Defense vision of "dominant battle space awareness." It was created to exploit the potential of enhanced collection systems, digital processing technology and the prospective expansion in commercial imagery than its separate predecessor organizations.

The Defense Mapping Agency apparently has tried to get approval for a Map-Sat which would be dedicated military mapping satellite, but this has not been approved.
Digital maps for Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (TLAM-C) with conventional warheads were prepared using satellite imagery by the Defense Mapping Agency.
Mapping satellite systems were also used to assist in the location and destruction of Iraqi mobile missile launchers, by analyzing terrain to determine likely firing sites.

The National Imagery and Mapping Agency, newest Combat Support Agency of the Department of Defense, was established by the National Imagery and Mapping Act of 1996, effective 1 October 1996, with headquarters in Fairfax, Va. In recognition of its unique responsibilities and global mission, NIMA is also designated a part of the U.S. Intelligence Community.
To accomplish its far-reaching mission, NIMA incorporates the Defense Mapping Agency, the Central Imagery Office, the Defense Dissemination Program Office, the National Photographic Interpretation Center, in their entirety; and imagery exploitation, dissemination and processing elements of the Defense Intelligence Agency, National Reconnaissance Office, Defense Airborne Reconnaissance Office, and Central Intelligence Agency.

The Defense Mapping Agency site DMA — the fenced in area of the Fairfax County Park Authority, Turner Farm along Springvale Road, Great Falls, VA. — has been commonly known to the residents of Great Falls as the “Nike Missile” site.
In 1972 the Army Topographic Command (as Army Map Service had become in 1968), the Air Force's, Aeronautical Chart and Information Center, parts of the Naval Oceanographic Office and the Mapping Office of the Defense Intelligence Agency, DIA, were merged to form the Defense Mapping Agency, DMA.
This period corresponded with the time when it was realized that better information was needed for missiles used in defense.
