The idea was to express the things the defense can't affect in one area and check the results, then check those areas where it's possible the defense can have an effect and analyze how much of the performance is pitching and how much is defense.
To do this, I looked at the range of values for Defense Independent ERA and compared how close they were to the range of values of actual ERA.
For example, if the range of Defense Independent ERA was between 4.00 and 5.00, it would be a good indication that there's a lot about pitching not covered in the stat, because ERAs have a much larger range than that.

A question that plagued him was how to separate pitching stats from defensive stats, because at the time, they were seemingly intertwined.
He was able to separate these stats from the rest of the defense, simply because you can't field a strikeout, a walk or a home run.
If the defense happens to be in a drawn in position (trying to prevent a run from scoring), they might not reach a sharply hit ball.

We'll assume that they switch Cameron to RF (so Beltran is replacing their RFers) and that switching Cameron to RF saves them 10 runs on defense and that all of the other players do the same as last year.
It was a statistically significant difference, but it was small, around 5 points of batting average.

Greener on the Other Side: Chips and DIPS
DIPS, or Defense Independent Pitching Statistics is one of the most accurate statistics that can be used to determine how well a pitcher has pitched, independent from his defense behind him.
Defense-dependent statistics, such as the rate of hits allowed on balls put into play (other than home runs), are almost entirely the result of luck and the skills of the defensive players on the field.
However, both of them were effected negatively by their defense for they both had component era's around the 3.50 range.

Defense independent pitching statistics - Definition, explanation
In baseball, Defense Independent Pitching Statistics (DIPS), also known as DIPS ERA (dERA), is a sabermetric statistic which measures a pitcher's effectiveness based only on plays which are completely under his control: home runs allowed, strikeouts, and walks.
Those plays are under only the pitcher's control in the sense that fielders have no effect on their outcome.
Complicated regression calculations were done using play-by-play data for every single MLB game from 1973 to the present, and from that data this equation was derived:

Batted Balls and DIPS -- The Hardball Times
When Voros McCracken released his first Defense Independent Pitching Statistics (DIPS) article, a huge wave of excitement passed over the baseball statistical community.
His conclusion, "that major league pitchers don’t appear to have the ability to prevent hits on balls in play," was a breakthrough, and it led to a whole new approach to pitching analysis.
Moreover, these statistics fit the definition of “defense independent;" “scorer independent” does not have to be a requirement.

 Futility Infielder • DIPS
DIPS was invented by an analyst named Voros McCracken, whose studies of pitching statistics suggest that major league pitchers do not differ greatly on their ability to prevent hits on balls in play.
The result is a translated line of Defense Independent Pitching Statistics, including a DIPS ERA (or dERA); that is, an ERA based on defense-independent pitching performance.
The baseline IP is the number of innings pitched in both seasons a pitcher needed to qualify for the study.
