A Brief Declaration of the Sacraments / by William Tyndale
For the sacrament doth much more vehemently print lively the faith, and make it sink down into the heart, than do bare words only: as a man is more sure of that he heareth, seeth, feeleth, smelleth and tasteth, than that he heareth only.
Of this ye may perceive again what the sacrament meaneth, and what the intent of the ordinance was, and how such ceremonies came up, and whence they had their beginning, and what the fruit thereof is, and what is therein to be sought.
And even so say they that the doctors called the sacrament the body and blood of Christ after the same manner only; because it is the memorial, the earnest, and seal of his body and blood, as the use of the scriptures is to call signs by the names of things signified thereby.

Our Catholic Faith - Sacrament Of Anointing The Sick
In the Eastern Orthodox (schismatical) Church this sacrament is normally administered by a number of priests (seven, five, three; but in case of necessity even one is enough); and it is the priests themselves who bless the oil on each occasion before use.
In previous ages the sacrament was known by a variety of names, e.g., the holy oil, or unction, of the sick; the unction or blessing of consecrated oil; the unction of God; the office of the unction; etc. In the Eastern Church the later technical name is euchelaion (i.e.
Again, it was one of the three sacraments (the others being confirmation and matrimony) which Wycliffites and Hussites were under suspicion of contemning, and about which they were to be specially interrogated at the Council of Constance by order of Martin V (Bull "Inter cunctas", 22 Feb., 1418.--Denzinger, op.

Wherefore, if any one should wish to call it a sacrament, he ought still to distinguish it from those preceding ones [the two former ones], which are properly signs of the New Testament, and testimonies of grace and the remission of sins.
Because this is a Sacrament of the New Testament, as Christ clearly says, he ought for this very reason to be confident that what is promised in the New Testament, namely, the free remission of sins, is offered him.

Yet the other sacraments, and the importance the RCC places on all of them, goes beyond the scope of Scripture, and actually diminishes the clear, biblical doctrine that we are all saved, sanctified, and justified by faith in the redeeming sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
I also reject your contention that the seven sacraments "are required for a rounded and Spirit-Filled life." I have been baptized, and practice communion, as these "sacraments" are biblically grounded.
What matters is that you realize that the sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church are, by their own doctrines, essential in the work of salvation, and that doctrine is unbiblical.

 Sacraments
For Calvin, a sacrament is a "seal," a sign that God uses to validate his covenant; in the case of Christian sacraments, the New Covenant of grace in Christ.
The Council declared that all seven sacraments were instituted and sanctified by Christ, handed down by the apostles, and convey grace by His power.
Probably the sacrament that excited the most interest, indeed ferocious controversy, in the period was the Eucharist (or as many Protestants preferred to call it, the Lord's Supper), the center of Christian worship.

Holy Matrimony by Pauline Zingleman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The name sacrament cannot be cited as satisfactory evidence, since it did not acquire until a late period the exclusively technical meaning it has today; both in pre‑Christian times and in the first centuries of the Christian Era it had a much broader and more indefinite signification.
To repeat, a sacrament is a visible sign, permanently instituted by Christ, for the purpose of producing sanctifying grace in the soul.
Since the sacraments are the signs of sacred things insofar as by these sacred things men are sanctified, and since the external rite cannot of itself give grace, it is evident that all sacraments properly so called must originate in divine appointment.

At last the other four Sacraments were "found again," and a settlement agreeable to both parties arrived at and embodied in a treatise known as The Institution of a Christian Man. It consisted of four parts, the Apostle's Creed, the Seven Sacraments, the Ten Commandments, and the Our Father and Hail Mary.

Part Two: Channels of Grace - Confirmation
And always the understanding was that Confirmation was a sacrament distinct from Baptism; that it consisted in the imposition of hands by the apostles and their successors; that the effect of the outward rite was a special communication of the Holy Spirit, the divine source of interior sanctification.
This defense of Catholic truth should always, of course, be done with prudence and charity.
The Church’s general law is that “the sacrament of Confirmation is to be conferred at about the age of discretion.” The conference of bishops may determine another age.

Luther's studies of St. Paul led him to conclude that one's faith, not the sacraments, were the key to God's grace, and that made him feel much better.
In these writings he proclaimed his famous doctrines of justification by faith, the priesthood of all believers, and his reduction of the number of sacraments from seven to two.
Nowhere was the political aspect of the Reformation more apparent than in England, where the king who wrote a pamphlet against Martin Luther in defense of the seven sacraments was the same king who ended up taking control of the church away from the Pope and abolishing the monasteries.

In Rome, already having terrible problems with the Lutheran Reformation in Germany, the last thing the pope at the time wanted was a quarrel with the king of England, who had been really a kind of a paragon, at least in terms of support of traditional doctrine.
The Sacrifice of the Mass was maintained, celibacy of the clergy, auricular confession, the seven sacraments, all those things which Luther did away with were maintained by the new head of the Church, the king.
And so it is that between 1547 and 1553 their genuinely Lutheran views of justification, revelation, the sacraments, and original sin came to be the official ones taught by the monarchy.

It follows that to the Church alone, the guardian of everything that refers to the Sacraments, belongs every right and power to determine the validity of this contract which was elevated to the high dignity of a Sacrament; and in consequence, it belongs to the Church alone to judge the validity or invalidity of marriages.
The reason is that this doctrine is founded on a dogmatic error which has been condemned several times by the Church, that is, the reduction of the Sacrament to an extrinsic ceremony and to the condition of a simple rite.
God's omnipotent grace, an essential fruit of the Sacrament, will constantly be with these souls, to sustain them in the moments of weakness, to sweeten their sacrifice, to comfort and console them even in the hardest and longest trials.

The student may be frustrated, as I was, by the image of Henry VIII’s Defense of the Seven Sacraments against Martin Luther.
The exhibit notes point out that while Henry may not have written the Defense himself, “[h]e did add, in his own hand, the couplet seen here, in which he presents the book to Pope Leo X.” This couplet, however, is not fully legible, and no transcription is provided.
Since exhibit notes tell us that “the manuscript was shown to famous visitors to the Vatican Library as early as the 16th century,” it would be interesting to know exactly what the redoubtable Henry wrote.
