Oasis - Definitely Maybe   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Definitely Maybe manages to encapsulate much of the best of British rock and roll — from the Beatles to the Stone Roses — in the space of 11 songs.
DEFINITELY MAYBE makes it supremely obvious that Oasis have studied the lessons of the English rock aristocracy--drawing on influences as superficially disparate as the Beatles, T. Rex and the Buzzcocks--and have learned them well.
But the true beauty of Definitely Maybe is in its innocence -- the music hadn't worn itself out yet, and there was still room in an Oasis-less world for the concept of melody and attitude winning over originality.

 Oasis CD Review: Definitely Maybe
Definitely Maybe was the debut album that shot Oasis into the rock and roll hall of fame in 1994.
Definitely Maybe shot to the number one spot in the record charts within a week of release, surpassing Blur's successful Parklife album as well as all  expectations for the band's debut.
Definitely Maybe therefore represents the origin of Oasis themselves and is arguably the best of the three albums on release.

Oasis: Definitely Maybe - Playing God - Stylus Magazine
When I finally picked it up, Definitely Maybe mostly fulfilled my expectations, and there’s certainly a clutch of enduring songs at its heart, but the whole thing goes slack at times, and there are a couple of just incredibly bad songs (if I never hear “Shakermaker” again, it will be too soon).
If Oasis had released this version I’m sure that in addition to maybe getting a bit more respect (which their early work, at least, deserves), there’d be less debate over which is their finest album.
The major reason I like Definitely Maybe so much is that every time the songs either introduce an element of depressive doubt or overweening arrogance something comes along to right the balance, leaving the whole teetering between the two extremes.

It was maybe one of the hundred best albums of the '90s.
But even the Gallagher brothers, who are not renowned for their shyness when it comes to trumpeting their own worth, would have to hide their blushes and admit that calling their debut album the greatest of all time is a folly.

Definitely Maybe was one of the greatest debut albums of all-time.
It's no wonder that this was the album that gave Oasis a huge American audience (Definitely Maybe barely cracked the top 50); the album was a huge hit on adult contemporary radio.
The guitar-driven dynamics definitely make the song sound "important," but the sad narrative deals not with an epic life struggle or the battle between man vs. machine.

I am not saying Definately Maybe is poor- it may be their finest work- but the one criticism I do have is that the same basic instruments are used through the entire album, so it all sounds fairly similar throughout.

Comments for Oasis: Definitely Maybe - Playing God - Stylus Magazine
The problem with the tracklisting on Definitely Maybe isn't that it makes for a bad album, but that it obscures the center of Noel's songwriting.
A consciousness of the passing of time, never made too obvious on their albums, was always the center of their b-sides--even those to the Morning Glory singles.
Definitely Maybe goes so far as to surround 'Slide Away' with two lighter songs, just as The Queen Is Dead did for 'There is a Light'.

Paradoxically derivative and unique, Definitely Maybe was so groundbreaking that bands have been trying for the last decade to capture its sound, its magic.
Like Revolver, Kick (INXS), Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby (just a few examples off-the-cuff), Definitely Maybe captured the spirit of the time in which it was released and sent rock in a different direction.
What "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" were to the British Invasion, the Definitely Maybe album was to the "Brit Pop" movement.

 Definitely Maybe by Oasis CD
The songs are about what they like ("Cigarettes & Alcohol"), who they want to be ("Rock 'n' Roll Star," "Live Forever"), and what they want to avoid becoming ("Married With Children"); and they defy turning into typical rock star cliches only through sheer will, as well as simultaneously pretty and edgy guitars.
Before Morning Glory, there was Definitely Maybe that got the band rolling.
Best songs include Live Forever[greatest oasis track ever], Supersonic, Slide Away, Shakermaker, Rock N Roll Star, Cigarettes and Alcohol, Bring It On Down and Sad Song[great acoustic song] that's only on the Definitely Maybe DVD and not on the regular album.
