  Pedophilia
Gene G. Abel, M.D. Candice Osborn, M.A. Alexandra M. Phipps, Ph.D. Pedophilia is the most common paraphiliac act involving the touching of a victim against his or her will or who is unable to give consent.
Definitions of pedophilia in the official psychiatric diagnostic system are clear, whereas political and legal definitions of pedophilia are frequently inconsistent; thus, because the descriptions of the populations being treated are unclear, it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments.
Therefore, as the current treatments for pedophilia are reviewed in this chapter, the reader is urged to keep in mind that significant confusion exists in the literature as a result of inconsistent definitions of pedophilia.

The word 'pedophilia' was invented by the medical profession, and hence that is the definitive meaning, whatever its vague and contradictory adoption by the wider community.
Pedophilia (irregardless of incorrect popular usage) only refers to sexual attraction to prepubescent children, not pubescent children (if they are to be called 'children' at all, and not, as would be more correct, adolescents).
When the jargon definition you prefer differs from the usual definition, both should be explained, and without the judgemental notion that one is the 'understanding' and the other is the 'misunderstanding'.

 Definitions of pedophilia
The term pedophilia is used in both a colloquial sense and a perhaps more precise and exacting academic sense.
In colloquial use, pedophilia refers to sex between adults and children, an act which generally arouses a strong sense of moral indignation or outrage from society, particularly in the West.
Some advocates of decriminalizing pedophilia have promoted these terms in hopes of reducing the social stigma of both the desire for and the practice of adult-child sex.

Those who have committed sexual crimes against children, but do not meet the normal diagnosis criteria for pedophilia, are referred to as ''situational'' or ''regressed offenders'', whereas offenders primarily attracted toward children are called ''structured pedophiles'' or ''fixated pedophiles'', as their orientation is fixed by the structure of their personality.
Pedophilia, however, is generally regarded as highly resistant to psychological interference and most "reparative strategies" have been dismissed as ineffective.
These terms are used in contrast with pedophilia; however pedophilia is sometimes used more broadly in the western world to describe both ephebophilia and attraction to younger children, that is, any person younger than the legal age of consent.

Pedophilia (American English) or pædophilia/paedophilia (British English), from the Greek παιδοφιλια (paidophilia) < παις (pais) "boy, child" and φιλια (philia) "friendship", (ICD-10 F65.4) is the condition of people (either adult or adolescent) whose primary sexual attraction is toward prepubescent children.
Note that pedophilia can be diagnosed solely in the presence of fantasies or sexual urges on the subject's part — it need not involve sexual acts with children, and indeed "Pedophilia" is not a legal term, it describes no act.

Pedophilia, paedophilia, or pædophilia (see spelling differences), is the paraphilia of being sexually attracted primarily or exclusively to pre-pubescent or pubescent children.
Strictly speaking, this definition would include many adolescents and prepubescents, for whom such an interest might be normal; thus, some experts add the criterion that the interest be toward children at least five years younger than the subject.
Those who have committed sexual crimes against children, but do not meet the normal diagnosis criteria for pedophilia, are referred to as situational, opportunistic, or regressed offenders, whereas offenders primarily attracted toward children are called structured, preferential, or fixated pedophiles, as their orientation is fixed by the structure of their personality.

In DSM-II (American Psychiatric Association, 1968), pedophilia remained a “sexual deviation,” but “sociopathy” was gone and pedophilia fell into a group of “nonpsychotic mental disorders.” Then, in DSM-III (American Psychiatric Association, 1980), pedophilia was included in the group of paraphilias.

MHAMic - Personality Correlates of Pedophilia (Okami & Goldberg)
Another term used inconsistently in the literature is “child.” Studies often define youth in middle to late adolescence as “children,” and their sexual relationships with someone over 18 as “abuse” due to their age rather than the nature of the interaction.
Furthermore, researchers commonly do not use the current DSM definition of pedophilia in their studies, which require that the person’s sexual preference be for prepubescent children, and that these feelings endure for at least 6 months.
Again, this blurring of definitions is due to the moral and legal status of sexual activity involving adults and minors, and the almost exclusive use of criminal samples in studies purporting to examine “pedophilia.”
