TV narrative thus opens two possibilities that are not available to the cinematic brand, but these two distinctive properties of the medium are mutually exclusive in commercial programming.
The dual allegiance of the show to the randomness of life and to the control of narrative art is reflected in the ambiguous stance of the audience with respect to the hero.
Recent treatments of the importance of TV shows in the popular press (daily newspapers and general interst magazines) suggest that far from being regarded as fictional worlds created for the sake of pure entertainment, these shows are credited with the power to determine what is allowed and forbidden.

The main concern seems to be that the show is aimed at and enjoyed by heterosexual men, and it depicts stereotypes of the gay community that aren't very realistic.
Debates about what TV shows say about the communities on which they are based are not new.
For conflict to be communicated readily in a short time, TV takes shortcuts, including dividing a cast into "types" to lay the ground for using them as vehicles to tell stories.

 TV Rankings
Since the creation of this list, some of the shows have gone on hiatus or have been outright cancelled.  Hopefully, some of the lesser shows will follow in their footsteps.
The older shows in this group have already claimed their stake as some the best in TV History, and the newer ones are well on their way.
Why are these shows still on?  Because they are either entrenched in the audience's mind, or there is simply no viable replacement waiting in the wings.  Shows like these are the ones that give TV a bad name.

Before the video recorder, missing a tv show was a definitive act - there was nothing that could be done unless the tv station was kind enough to repeat it.
Pirated copies of almost every first-run tv show from any of the networks in the United States is now available for free download on the Internet hours after it is shown.

You see, this article was originally supposed to be filled with wonderful quotes and comments from the four cast members/voices and the executive producer of the hit Spike TV show “MXC” who I was supposed to interview way back in April, long after the final Graphic had rolled off the press.
The show’s insanely funny commentary makes the show so much more than just making fun of circa-1987 Japanese people getting the shittake mushrooms knocked out of them in a variety of zany, painful ways.
Unlike the British version of the show, which directly translated what was said and going on, “MXC” throws everything away but the actual video footage.

 The Andy Griffith Show
It was producer Aaron Ruben (writer for The Phil Silvers Show), Sheldon Leonard (producer of The Danny Thomas Show) and Andy Griffith's attention to the scripts that made the series as engaging as it was flat-out funny.
By default, the focus of the show fell to the remaining supporting players, especially Goober Pyle (George Lindsay) who was introduced as a replacement for his cousin Gomer in 1964.
The Andy Griffith Show was so popular both as a program and as a notion that superior scripts were no longer necessary to attract an audience to CBS Monday nights at 9:00.

Life's small irritations: it always annoys me that the TV show M*A*S*H, starring Alan Alda, is so much better known and more widely seen than Robert Altman's original 1970 film MASH (with Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye, and without asterisks in the title).
Altman's movie is a classic, really brutal and anarchic in a way that the TV show could never be.
In MASH it also contributes to the chaotic atmosphere, and helped MASH usurp the claim of Mike Nichols' Catch-22 (released the same year) to be the definitive depiction of the madness of life in the military.
