Definitive stamp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A definitive postage stamp is a regular issue stamp that is part of a definitive issue or definitive series consisting of a range of denominations sufficient to cover all postal rates usefully.
Definitives are the workhorse stamps of a country, and as such, they tend to be small, with designs reflecting local culture and history.
An exception would be the death of a monarch, necessitating a new definitive series for the new ruler.

The definitives included a dramatic departure form the usual engraved stamps of the period; the 10c and 1lb stamp were typographed and had a silhouette of a lion, with color combinations of fl/yellow and fl/red, respectively.
A definitive series, with new designs, was issued in 1954 for Queen Elizabeth, and in 1958 a pair of commemoratives marked the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the Great Lakes of Africa by Burton and Speke.
A new definitive series in 1960 used simpler and more symbolic designs, and was followed in 1963 by three sets of commemoratives.

Definitive series   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-20)
Definitives are the workhorse stamps of a country, and as such, they tend to be small, with designs reflecting local cultureand history.
The definitives of poorer countries will often be very plain and cheaply printed, unlike the large and decorativecommemoratives, which are almost pure profit if bought by foreign collectors and never used for postage.
Since postal administrations know that stamp collectors want toown every stamp of a definitive series, and a complete series can be quite expensive, there is always the temptation to make someextra money by issuing new definitive sets as well as including stamps with very high face values in a set.

The latest definitive series from the United States is called the "Distinguished Americans." The first two stamps in the series are the 10¢ Joseph W. Stilwell stamp (left) and the 33¢ Claude Pepper stamp (right), both issued in 2000.
Definitive stamps, however, are usually actively sold for longer periods and may be sent to press again and again whenever additional stamps are needed.
Certain covers bearing definitive stamps are often sought after by postal history collectors, who may be looking for examples of specific rates being fulfilled or the proper use of standard or unusual denominations in a definitive series.

postage_stamp is a regular_issue stamp that is part of a definitive issue or definitive series consisting of a range of denominations sufficient to cover all postal_rates usefully.
Previously such stamps were simply referred to as "general" or "regular" issues, or simply not identified as such, but the issuance of commemorative_stamps and "special issues" that had begun in the 1890s had left to a confused situation where countries were issuing large numbers of stamps that saw little actual use.
Since postal administrations know that stamp_collectors want to own every stamp of a definitive series, and a complete series can be quite expensive, there is always the temptation to make some extra money by issuing new definitive sets as well as including stamps with very high face values in a set.
