 Encyclopedia: Deflector Dish
The navigational deflector is used while moving at faster-than-light speeds to prevent damage to ships' hulls from micrometeors and friction from the microscopic objects and extremely thin gas found in interstellar space.
Deflectors accomplish the first goal through the use of powerful deflector/tractor beams extending several thousand kilometers fore of their ships, aimed automatically through use of the ships' long-range sensors.
The beams and shields created by the deflector are often a source of subspace distortion and EM radiation, which can interfere with the operation of ships' sensors.

 Navigational deflector - Memory Alpha
The navigational deflector (also called the deflector dish, the deflector array or the nav deflector) is a component of many starships, used to deflect space debris, asteroids, microscopic particles and other objects that might collide with the ship.
One potential problem of using the deflector is that the deflector beams produced cause a great deal of subspace distortion, which can hinder the effectiveness of a starship's sensors and as a result of this the long-range sensor arrays are placed in a circular fashion around the deflector.
During 2372 the deflector of the Defiant was modified in just ten minutes to perform as a single-shot phaser emitter when the ship was under attack from a Jem'Hadar battleship in the atmosphere of a class J gas giant.

Knowledge King - Deflector Dish   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
A Deflector dish is a Treknobabble device from the fictional Star Trek television series; a part of many Federation starships (although there are some notable exceptions, such as the Miranda-class USS Reliant from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan).
In Star Trek: First Contact, a deflector dish was used to open a portal in time from the late 21st century to the 24th.
The Borg also attempted to use this deflector dish to create an "interplexing beacon;" a device which they could use to contact their homeworlds in the Delta Quadrant.

The Bridge Command Specialist School Textbook
The main deflector dish consists of a duranium framework onto which is attached the actual emitter array, constructed of a series of molybdenum-duranium mesh panels that radiate the flux energy output.
The navigational deflector, also controlled by the subspace field coils, is a powerful tractor/deflector that sweeps thousands of kilometers ahead of the ship, pushing aside larger objects that may present a collision hazard.
The deflector field itself is emitted and shaped by a series of conformal transmission grids on the spacecraft exterior, resulting in a field that closely follows the form of the vehicle itself.

The deflector normally pushed away the very hydrogen molecules that the Bussard ramscoop was designed to collect.
In order to overcome this, the subspace fields were manipulated to create holes in specified areas of the deflector fields, which the hydrogen atoms could pass through so they could be collected.

Impulse sprinkler deflector spoon - Patent 4330087
The water stream drives the deflector portion against the force of a biasing spring away from the water stream for impact with a portion of the sprinkler to partially rotate the sprinkler, whereupon the spring urges the deflector spoon back into engagement with the water stream for subsequent and successive reaction therewith.
The side and front walls of the spoon deflector portion are configured to form a relatively sharply curved, or deep-dished, upper deflector face extending over approximately the upper third of the deflector portion, and a correspondingly relatively sharply curved or deep-dished lower deflector face extending over approximately the lower third of the deflector portion.
These upper and lower deflector faces 52 and 54, respectively, occupy approximately one-third each of the vertical dimension of the deflector portion 46, and function to impact with the water stream to extract a relatively large magnitude of driving energy from the water stream by virtue of the relatively sharp change in stream direction.

Voyager was the first ship to feature an auxiliary deflector dish on the forward hull, later incorporated in Sternbach's design of the Nova-class.
At the sides of the auxiliary deflector are transport emitters, large, flat antennae, that are also positioned in other locations that are responsible for sending and receiving the transporters' focused matter streams.

FSD : Starship Operations : Quantum Slipstream   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
The quantum slipstream is actually a narrowly focused, directed warp field that is initiated by manipulating the fabric of the space-time continuum at the quantum level.
It works by focusing a quantum field through a deflector dish to generate massive changed in local space curvature; this creates a subspace tunnel, which is projected in front of the vessel.
In order to maintain the slipstream a ship has to constantly modify the quantum field with its deflector dish; however, the calculations involved are too complicated, and the time available too short, for current Starfleet technology.
