  Accused priest seeks defrocking
A Northern Kentucky priest under suspension for allegedly abusing a minor in the early 1970s has asked to be defrocked, Diocese of Covington officials said Tuesday.
The priest, who cannot perform any ministry or even refer to himself as a priest under his suspension, had agreed to undergo voluntary “laicization” — the formal term for being defrocked — in his separate settlement with Mr.
Father Holtz did not return phone calls seeking comment, but earlier had said that he was told by diocesan officials that they were taking care of the laicization.

Defrocking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
To defrock or laicize a priest is to deprive him of the right to exercise the functions of the priestly office.
The anathema, the permanent act of excommunication, against a member of the church or a former cleric is usually imposed by the decision of the synod of bishops or the ecclesiastical council.
In such cases, this does not only defrocks the former cleric but also banishes him from entering an Orthodox church, receiving the Eucharist and other sacraments or being blessed by a priest.

Meanwhile, two new sexual abuse complaints against other priests in the Springfield Roman Catholic Diocese are being investigated by a Misconduct Commission, according to the Most Rev. Thomas L. Dupre, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield,.

 Opinion: Bishops' critical step
It is regrettable the bishops failed to go further by defrocking these priests and disciplining bishops who chose for years to look the other way.
It would have been a disastrous result had the bishops tried to put a number on the times it was acceptable for a priest to molest a child.
The final compromise calls for the removal of any priest who has ever abused minors from the active ministry, but to avoid the more complicated and divisive issue of whether these priests should be defrocked.

 Defrocking of priest requested
We can look after them once they are defrocked and come out of prison as we should anyone who calls upon us for help.
However, for them to have the power and respect which comes with being a priest after abusing a child is a sin against God; who tells us through our teachings in the church very clearly what should happen to such people, whether they be members of the laity or clergy.
Maybe defrocking would then give a message to the wider world that the Catholic Church does mean that it wants to protect our children and the vulnerable.
