Although the group was more heavy metal-based early on, the early '90s saw the Deftones expand their sound even further, obviously inspired by such groundbreakers as Tool, Rage Against the Machine, and Faith No More.

And considering they are on the perpetual edge of breaking up, at least they are attempting to challenge their audience, which is more than I can say for some bands.

I just think that the self titled Deftones record was experimental and shitty enough that they should have gone back to their roots.
The Deftones are credited as one of the fathers of the nu-metal movement or what critics call rage rock.

I heard, before this album was released, that the Deftones had to decide on three songs to cut from the record.
If the Deftones are one of your favorite bands (you're not just a "White Pony" fan), I do NOT reccomend you skip this C.D. Even though it's not a step forward for the band, it's a good listen, and you should be used to the heavy stuff by now.
Unlike the other records the Deftones ditched the rap/ rock style they they were renowened for and Chino decided to sing more.

The live songs are OK, but I think that the Deftones are best in the studio, if this example is anything to go by.
Some wicked new tracks by the Deftones; 'Back To School' kicks out and makes you wanna jump hard and the contrasting acoustic/quiet version of 'Change (in the house of flies)' is even more spookier and brilliant than the album version.
An excellent CD for those yet to start a Deftones CD collection, show-casing where they came from and what direction they are going.

After a disappointingly average rendition of Change, some much needed va-va-voom was injected with some old-skool Deftones in the form of Root.
Following on was a hard hitting Head Up, which saw two lucky fans hoisted onstage to provide backing vocals, leaving just enough time for the maniacal 7 Words.
A good set on the whole, the Deftones could emphatically claim job well done.

Deftones tried a little different approach on this album - instead of doing the switching between soft and heavy within one song (which became formulaic after a while), they just went with flow, and tried to actually combine these opposing elements into cohesive sound.
Deftones are a heavy band, dude, and that's what heavy bands do.
The Deftones is a wonderful album that is comparable or philisophical comparable to any of the good rock to come out of the 70's (not in sound of course, just song structure and maybe lyrics).
