 Deftones
Deftones has often been praised as one of the more innovative and unique rock bands of recent years.
Though Deftones were only tangentially associated with nu metal, they feared the increasingly negative use of the term and separated themselves from other such groups, both professionally and aesthetically.
The album included a collaboration with frontman Max Cavalera of Sepultura and Soulfly on "Headup," a tribute to Max's late step-son Dana Wells (this song actually inspired Max to create Soulfly, a band dedicated to Dana Wells).

Sacramento's Deftones have long been in the business of confounding expectations and this, the follow-up to their Grammy-winning White Pony, is far, far from the trashy metal suggested by its cover.
Deftones have made an album which is beyond the understanding of most of their older fans, this isn’t 1997 any more.
Deftones are in a league of their own, whilst their heavy style is enough to put the mainstream people off, believe me, they are just as important as any of your Radioheads.

With "White Pony," their third Maverick album, Deftones have made a record as erotic as it is brutal, as dynamic as it is hushed, as relentless as it is gentle, as hooky as it is experimental, and as lush as it is tight.
Deftones were formed back in 1988, but their first debut was only in 1995, at that time we met Deftones with "Adrenaline," a combustible compound of razor-blade riffs, rumble, rage, and rap-ish delivery.
Deftones spread to both extremes, seeking the logical limits of guitar savagery while flirting with a Gothic or New Wave sense of spook and haunting sparseness.

The Deftones didn't really have a hard time with their third album, White Pony, since it did receive generally positive reviews and entered the Billboard charts at number three.
Deftones continue in that vein through much of the first half of the record, gradually working in more atmospheric numbers as the record draws to a close.
Deftones sticks a little too close to familiar territory this time around -- the sound is still good, but knowing that they have done a record like White Pony, this feels like a disappointment, especially because in its unevenness, it sounds like it is the album that should have come before this one.

Deftones is an excellent hard rock/metal album that aspires to challenge the listener, which is more than can be said for most nu-metal acts.
The band was called the Deftones, and there was something about their sophomore effort, Around the Fur, that just spoke to me. Maybe it was the pent up rage and aggression.
Moreno is the focle point of the Deftones, and this album proves that simple fact yet again.

But something was off with the Deftones while they languished in the bleak, wintry abyss in the richest per-capita state in the union.
But it suuuuucked." The Deftones started writing material in their Sacramento, California, hometown a little more than a year and a half ago, then took the fall off to allow Moreno time to work with his side project, Team Sleep.

The album is a solid 11 tracks that seem to let it travel from beginning to end pretty well.
In the universe of Nu-metal or whatever you want to call it, the Deftones seem to be exploring more of the hardcore aspects when they decide to be heavy, but then in the next breath, they are sensitive and sensual enough to capture the essence of Morrissey or maybe the Cure.
Deftones are always evolving yet they keep their classic style which is cool.

Yes, singer Chino Moreno can flow with the best of them and he did just that on their first album ‘Adrenaline,’ but with their next album, ‘Around the Fur,’ and now with ‘White Pony,’ it is clear that Chino and the Deftones have moved on to new sonic territory.
The Deftones have always made music that has drastic changes in dynamics, which are taken to new extremes on this album.
Then the album shifts gears to the spacey laid-back trip-hop sounds of the song "Teenager," which is the softest and most melodic song that Deftones have ever recorded.

The band's self-titled fourth album, as erotic as it is brutal, as relentless as it is gentle, rockets the Grammy-winning Deftones to the top of modern rock.
On their fourth and self-titled release, the Deftones remind us of how they got to the point of popularity which they have achieved, the means of which few other bands can, or have, matched.
The album opens with Hexagram, a metal groove based around axeman Stephen Carpenter's dissonant guitar musings and topped off by a scream from vocalist Chino Moreno that sounds as if his throat is ripping in half from the effort.

Deftones - White Pony - On Second Thought - Stylus Magazine
What my friends never did was give the Deftones’ 1995 debut album, Adrenaline, a fair listen, all they cared about was that they had read somewhere that along with Korn’s debut, Adrenaline had spearheaded the rap rock neanderthal movement so prevalent in radio and MTV rotation today.
I found myself wondering on my first listen if the rest of the album would be able to live up to the quality of the opening tracks, and I was rarely disappointed.
I wasn’t able to convince all of my friends to respect the Deftones, and don’t even think that the album should be considered a classic in indie circles; but the ones that I converted agreed that White Pony was simply excellent music.

Despite the raw power and energy he captures, I have yet to hear a Deftones album with the necessary amount of polish that it is going to take for the mainstream pubic to start really “feeling” the Deftones.
In a way, this adds to the staying power of this album, because if it was all laid out there in the open with nothing to hunt for audibly, the album could be too sterile and boring.

 Deftones: White Pony (2000): Reviews
But at their best, the band fashions a heavy, claustrophobic atmosphere in which Moreno spins his dark, personal tales of misery and heartbreak against a backdrop of music that careens from the ugly to the beautiful.
White Pony ends up being more accessible than the group's two previous albums, because it's not a half-formed mess but a classic alternative-rock album, as gentle and catchy as it is dark.
