  PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: OTHER VOICES
Folksy hurdy gurdy and acoustic guitar carry the track "Deggial" to a building symphonic climax.
Great majestic passages suddenly erupt into a long frenzied metal refrain with fantastic guitar and synthesiser (though Johnsson uses little synth on this album).
Don't miss Deggial, the culmination of one of the most profound movements that has hit rock music in recent years.

  Rough Edge: Therion CD Reviews
What's cool about "Deggial" is that Therion is more elegant (almost delicate) than the symphony that accompanied Metallica during their symphonic foray and also much heavier than recent Metallica, too.
One gets the sense that an extraordinary amount of time was spent making sure that everything on "Deggial" was recorded properly and to the band's complete satisfaction.
"Deggial" is certainly a daring manner in which to interpret metal for the general populace, but I'd have to say that Therion are onto something here.

Deggial - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deggial is an album released by Swedish heavy metal band Therion in 2000.
As with many of Therion's other albums, Deggial features a choir and orchestra.
Unlike their earlier release Vovin, which seemed to focus more on vocals, Deggial's style leans towards hard rock and sounds overall like Vovin with more atmosphere.

"Deggial" is more good work from a very talented group of individuals, but this time there is more of an emphasis on lead guitar than I was expecting.
Deggial was released in March of 2000 and is tied with Vovin as my second favorite Therion album.
In Deggial, Therion combines the hardness and intensity of traditional metal with the dark and otherworldly feeling of operatic vocals.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Deggial
There are some moments on Deggial that remind you that metal doesn't have to be full-volume distortion to be heavy.
Yes, there's plenty of room for the core of the band to shine, but the focus is often moved off of them and onto the orchestral readings.
Deggial is a disc that I had high hopes for going into it, but it left me feeling like Therion could have accomplished much more, simply by layering on less.

 Therion Deggial CD
Deggial is even better than Vovin, which is a good album.
The reworking of Carl Orf's O Fortuna at the end of the recording is wonderful, and reminiscient of the majesty found on the previous album, Vovin.
Deggial has none of the strength of Vovin, and plods along, melodies falling from the speakers with little or no ability to grab, let alone bring in, the listener.

I believe Deggial signals the beginning of a new path for Therion, which continues with Johnsson's masterpiece The Secret of the Runes.

Deggial - Therion - Song Listings
By the time Deggial was released, Christofer Johnsson's Therion had already secured themselves a place in metal history.
Johnsson's curious decision to rely on '80s metal-style guitar in the vein of Iron Maiden takes some of the music's impact away; it would have been better served with a heavier, darker sound.
Still, there are some amazing moments here, in particular "Via Nocturna" and the excellent cover of Carl Orff's "O Fortuna." While not the best offering in their catalog, Deggial is a great starting point for the uninitiated, and of course, essential for the seasoned fan.

Well actually you don't have to wear a suit, but you must somewhere along the course of this cd, bang your head and than realize that you did it too long and are now raging to female vocals and a flute solo.
Deggial features fifty-eight minutes of pure bliss, everything a metal head or classical music/opera fan can want is found in this cd.
The difference between this album and '98's impressive "Vovin" is this is a tad more less heavy letting the classical instruments (flutes, violins, viola's, pianos, organs etc...) take over slightly more in the mix than before while the guitars are toned down to a more Iron maiden-esque level of heaviness.

 THERION Deggial reviews and MP3
Now this was not truly Operatic music in the normal sense but with a confluent merging of Classical melodies and classical instruments with heavy metal and augmenting the singers with both male and female choirs, the sound is eminently Operatic sounding and it is delicious.
The title track 'Deggial' is not as strong as the opener, and the album should have been called 'Seven secrets' in my opinion.
If your first experience of this album is 'The flight of the lord of the flies' you may well dismiss this album as a mish-mash of ideas.

THE METAL OBSERVER - Review - THERION - Deggial
"Deggial" is the title of the follow-up to "Vovin" and marks a step into a more guitary direction, contrary to the mostly surprisingly calm predecessor the band around Christofer Johnsson presented itself a bit heavier, but no less artistic and demanding.
The looong "Via Nocturna" with its two parts covers the whole spectrum, beginning with calm, very classical passages to very well integrated guitars and very variedly arranged choirs, it offers everything that THERION stand for.
Oh, and you will have to listen to "Deggial" for a few times until the arrangements truly unfold and you will be able to befriend the album.

The music on Deggial combines a lot of classical and operatic music and vocals mixed with more traditional rock guitaring.
Twenty seven artists entered the studio with the band to record the album, including a full choir, a tenor, strings, brass and woodwind, so at the very least the band can be applauded for getting the real thing to record this album instead of relying entirely on synthesizers.

THE METAL OBSERVER - Review - THERION - Deggial
