Topic: Degree symbol

Degree symbol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The degree symbol was originally an ancient symbol representing the Sun.
In the case of degrees of temperature, several scientific and engineering standards bodies, BIPM and the U.S. Government Printing Office prescribe printing the degree symbol with a space between the degree symbol and the number, as in "10 °C".
The degree symbol is never used to refer to temperatures measured in kelvins — the freezing point of water, for instance, is simply written as 273.15 K. The SI fundamental temperature unit is Kelvin, not degree Kelvin.

This distance is the average length of one degree of latitude (that is, the average distance between two lines of latitude 1° degree apart).
The Clark degree is defined as 1 part of calcium carbonate per 70 000 parts of water; this is about 14.3 parts per million (ppm), 17.1 mg/L, or 1 grain per gallon (gpg, another popular measure of hardness).
The number of degree days recorded on a given date is equal to the difference between 65 and the mean temperature for that date (figured as the average of the highest and lowest temperatures).

 Degrees, Minutes, Seconds
Each degree is split up into 60 parts, each part being 1/60 of a degree.
There are symbols that are used when stating angles using degrees, minutes, and seconds.
That is, we have 40 full degrees, 20 minutes - each 1/60 of a degree, and 50 seconds - each 1/60 of 1/60 of a degree.

On the Earth's surface, one degree of latitude actually varies from about 68.7 miles at the Equator to 69.4 miles at the poles, while one degree of longitude is about 69.17 miles at the Equator (shrinking to nothing at the poles!).
The Clark degree is defined as 1 part of calcium carbonate per 70 000 parts of water; this is about 14.3 ppm, 17.1 mg/L, or 1 grain per gallon (gpg), another popular measure of hardness.
The SI requires that temperatures on the absolute temperature scale be stated in kelvins, not in degrees Kelvin.

 BIPM - kelvin
The kelvin, unit of thermodynamic temperature, is the fraction 1/273.16 of the thermodynamic temperature of the triple point of water.
The unit of Celsius temperature is the degree Celsius, symbol °C, which is by definition equal in magnitude to the kelvin.
The kelvin and the degree Celsius are also the units of the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90) adopted by the CIPM in 1989 in its Recommendation 5 (CI-1989) (PV, 57, 115 and Metrologia, 1990, 27, 13).

If there is a degree sign after the angle, the trig function evaluates its parameter as a degree measurement.
Having the calculator in the wrong mode is a common mistake for beginners, especially those that are only familiar with degree angle measurements.
For those who wish to reconcile the various trig functions that depend on the units used, we can define the degree symbol (°) to be the value (PI/180).

§ 16. Centigrade / Celsius / Kelvin. 4. Science Terms. The American Heritage Book of English Usage. 1996
In order to remove this confusion, scientists agreed in 1948 that the temperature unit degree Centigrade would henceforth be called degree Celsius and the symbol would be °C. In 1954, the definition of the Celsius scale itself was changed.
Rather than using the freezing and boiling points of water at 1 atmosphere of pressure, the degree interval Celsius was set equal to the degree interval Kelvin, and 0 °C was set equal to 273.15 degree Kelvin.
The fundamental temperature interval would be called simply kelvin (with a lowercase k), and the symbol would be K without any degree symbol (°).

 Temperature
The degree Celsius (°C) scale was devised by dividing the range of temperature between the freezing and boiling temperatures of pure water at standard atmospheric conditions (sea level pressure) into 100 equal parts.
The kelvin (K) temperature scale is an extension of the degree Celsius scale down to absolute zero, a hypothetical temperature characterized by a complete absence of heat energy.
Temperatures on this scale are called kelvins, NOT degrees kelvin, kelvin is not capitalized, and the symbol (capital K) stands alone with no degree symbol.

BIPM (the SI authourity) calls for no space between the degree symbol and the "C" (°C), which when combined with the convention of leaving a space between the numeral and the unit symbol means doing something like "5 °C" with °C being essentially a two-character symbol.
If I were writing the rules, I'd attach the degree symbol to the number (just like the official rules says to do for angular measurement--I've never understood why the two kinds of degrees are treated differently) and then have the C a space away (5° C).
They don't say why they decided not to make kelvins degrees, but my guess is they wanted a base unit to be a base unit, but kept the "degree" part of Celsius for the same reason they kept Celsius at all--as a practical concession to common practice, i.e., for tradition.
