Compared to the 0.6 degree Celsius increase during the 20th century, temperatures are predicted to increase 1.4 to 5.8 degrees Celsius by 2100.
Celsius [T]emperature scale according to which the temperature difference between the reference temperatures of the freezing and boiling points of water is divided into 100 degrees.
The Celsius scale sets 0.01 °C to be at the triple point of water and a degree Celsius to be 1/273.16 of the difference in temperature between the triple point of water and absolute zero.

Degree Celsius - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The degree Celsius (symbol: °C) is an SI unit of temperature.
The current official definition of the Celsius sets 0.01 ℃ to be at the triple point of water and a degree to be 1/273.16 of the difference in temperature between the triple point of water and absolute zero.
The degree Celsius is the only SI unit whose full unit name ("degree Celsius", not "Celsius") in English includes an upper case letter.

Celsius - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In 1948 the system's name was officially changed to Celsius by the 9th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CR 64), both in recognition of Celsius himself and to eliminate confusion caused by conflict with the use of the SI centi- prefix.
The current official definition of the Celsius sets 0.01°C to be at the triple point of water and a degree to be 1/273.16 of the difference in temperature between the triple point of water and absolute zero.
The Celsius scale is used throughout most of the world for day-to-day purposes, though in broadcast media it was still frequently referred to as centigrade until the late 1980s or early 1990s, particularly by weather forecasters on European networks such as the BBC, ITV, and RTÉ.

The Celsius temperature scale is named for the Swedish astronomer and physicist Anders Celsius (1701-1744), who used a similar scale.
The freezing point of water (at one atmosphere of pressure) was originally defined to be 0 degrees Celsius, while the boiling point is 100 degrees Celsius.
Fahrenheit set 0 degrees at the coldest temperature he could conveniently achieve using an ice and salt mixture, and he intended to set 100 degrees at the temperature of the human body.

 DEGREE - Definition
The degree of bachelor (of arts, science, divinity, law, etc.) is conferred upon those who complete a prescribed course of undergraduate study.
The degree of a power, or radical, is denoted by its index, that of an equation by the greatest sum of the exponents of the unknown quantities in any term; thus, ax^{4} + bx^{2} = c, and mx^{2}y^{2} + nyx = p, are both equations of the fourth degree.

Talk:Degree Celsius - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A degree Celsius is 1/100 of a 'grade' between 0 and 100 degrees.
According to some sources (such as http://susning.nu/Celsius for the fortunate few who read Swedish) Anders Celsius first defined 100 degrees as the temperature at which water freezes and zero degrees as the temperature at which water boils (the advantage of this, I suppose, being that outdoor temperatures would always be in the positive range).
I seem to remember when the BBC changed from using centigrade to celsius in weather forecasts that the explanation was that they were not the same.

The degree Celsius (°C) is a unit of temperature named for the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius (1701-1744), who first proposed it in 1742.
The Celsius temperature scale was designed so that the freezing point of water is 0 degrees, and the boiling point is 100 degrees at standard atmospheric pressure.
Celsius' scale originally used zero as the boiling point of water and 100 as the freezing point of water.

Celsius is, or relates to, the Celsius temperature scale (previously known as the centigrade scale).
The degree Celsius (symbol: °C) can refer to a specific temperature on the Celsius scale as well as serve as unit increment to indicate a temperature interval.
Until 1954, 0 °C on the Celsius scale was defined as the melting point of ice and 100 °C was defined as the boiling point of water under a pressure of one standard atmosphere; this close equivalency is taught in schools today.

§ 16. Centigrade / Celsius / Kelvin. 4. Science Terms. The American Heritage Book of English Usage. 1996
In 1795, 53 years after Anders Celsius proposed a Centigrade temperature scale, the prefix centi- began to be used in the metric system to mean “1/100,” as in centimeter, centigram, and centiliter.
In order to remove this confusion, scientists agreed in 1948 that the temperature unit degree Centigrade would henceforth be called degree Celsius and the symbol would be °C. In 1954, the definition of the Celsius scale itself was changed.
Rather than using the freezing and boiling points of water at 1 atmosphere of pressure, the degree interval Celsius was set equal to the degree interval Kelvin, and 0 °C was set equal to 273.15 degree Kelvin.
